GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore right fielder
James Quinn-Irons hit three home runs and drove in five, but the Patriots dropped the final game of the series at North Carolina A&T, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.
Junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht had three hits including his first home run of the season. Junior first baseman
Reece Woody hit a two-run home run in the first inning and has hit three home runs in his last five games.
Mason (9-10) took the lead against North Carolina A&T sophomore starter Evan Hart in the first inning. With two outs, junior catcher
Connor Dykstra was hit by a pitch and Woody followed with a two-run blast down the right field line to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
The Aggies got a run back in the home half of the inning against Mason senior starter
Ryan Peterson.
Senior left fielder Michael Logan went all the way to second on a throwing error and graduate student first baseman Tatsunori Negishi singled in a run to make it a 2-1 game.
Quinn-Irons led off the top of the second with a home run to right-center and with one out, Pracht belted a solo home run to right-center to increase the Mason lead to 4-1.
In the top of the third, senior center fielder
Jordan Smith singled to short, Dykstra was hit by a pitch and Woody reached on a throwing error to load the bases with no outs. Graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones then drove in a run with a ground out to extend the advantage to 5-1.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Jones was hit by a pitch and Quinn-Irons stepped to the plate and smashed a two-run home run over the left field fence to pad the lead to 7-1.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies put runners on the corners with a single and a double and scored an unearned run on a fielding error.
In the bottom of the sixth, North Carolina A&T loaded the bases with a walk a pair of singles. Junior right fielder Shemar Dalton drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left and Logan knocked in another with a double down the left field line to trim the Patriots lead to 7-4.
Quinn-Irons hit his third home run of the day with one-out in the top of the eighth to push the lead to 8-4.
In the home half of the eighth, the Aggies sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits and three walks to take their first lead of the game at 10-8.
The Patriots looked to rally in the ninth. Smith led off with a single and Dykstra walked. With one out, Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Quinn-Irons made it a one-run game at 10-9 with a sacrifice fly to right field, but Aggies junior reliever Angel Ortiz recorded a strikeout to end the game.
The Patriots used six pitchers in the game. Peterson allowed two unearned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Freshman
Ty Uchman (0-1) gave up four runs, two earned, on three hits and took the loss.
For the Aggies, Hart allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits in 3.1 innings. Ortiz (2-1) surrendered two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings and earned the win.
Quinn-Irons went 3-for-4 with three home runs and five RBI. Pracht was 3-for-4 with a home run and Smith finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Patriots begin a five-game homestand when they host Longwood on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
