FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of the series to Monmouth, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Freshman
Owen Hull hit a pinch-hit, solo home run in the eighth for his first NCAA home run. Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith hit a solo home run in the first inning and reached base four times in the game.
Mason (7-7) took the lead against Monmouth (3-9) junior starter Alec Couture in the bottom of the first when Smith hit a one-out home run to right-center to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
The Hawks took the lead in the top of the third against Mason redshirt sophomore starter
Konner Eaton.
Sophomore third baseman Matt Scrivanic hit a lead-off home run to left field to tie the game. Senior center fielder Eric Sabato and senior first baseman James Harmstead each plated a run with RBI-singles to put the Hawks in the lead, 3-1.
The Patriots responded in the home half of the third. Graduate student second baseman
South Trimble led off with a single to center and Smith was hit by a pitch. Graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones then ripped a two-run double to right-center to even the score, 3-3.
After two scoreless innings, Monmouth took the lead for good in the top of the sixth. Sabato led off with a double off the wall in left and scored on a RBI-single by Harmstead to make it 4-3.
In the top of the seventh, Monmouth sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits and three walks to build a 10-3 advantage.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Hull hit his first collegiate home run over the left field fence to make it 10-4.
In the top of the ninth, Monmouth loaded the bases on an error and two singles. The Hawks added a pair of runs with a ground out and a sacrifice fly to pad the lead to 12-4.
Freshman Jake Bulter led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Trimble was hit by a pitch. With one out, senior left fielder
Derek Wood singled to second base to load the bases. Sophomore
James Quinn-Irons drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field, Trimble scored on a wild pitch and Wood crossed the plate on a throwing error for the final run of the game and the 12-7 final score.
For the Patriots, Eaton (1-2) allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings and took the loss. Junior
Britt Yount gave up two runs in 1.1 innings. Graduate student
Luke Goodyear surrendered two runs on two hits and retired one batter in the seventh. Freshman
Toby Hueber allowed two runs on two hits and retired one batter in the seventh. Senior
Ryan Peterson gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
For the Hawks, Couture (1-2) allowed three runs on three hits in 5.2 innings to earn the win. Senior Dante Ciaramella gave up one run on one hit in 2.1 innings. Sophomore Jimmy Wigo surrendered three runs on one hit in the ninth.
The Patriots host Bucknell on Tuesday, March 12 and Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, March 13 with the first pitch for both game scheduled for 2 p.m. Spuhler Field.
