FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to open the 2023-24 campaign, competing in the Potomac Relay Invitational on Friday at 4 p.m. at Reeves Aquatic Center in Washington, D.C.
Mason will face American, Georgetown, Howard and Mount St. Mary's in the event.
Teams will compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, 500-yard freestyle relay, 800-yard freestyle relay and 1000-yard freestyle relay. The event will also feature butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke 3x100 relays and IM 4x100 relay.
Last season, both the Mason men's and women's teams placed first in the event.
The Mason women's team won five events and finished in the top spot with 554 points, followed by Georgetown (502), American (398), Howard (366) and Mount St. Mary's (356).
On the men's side, the Patriots won four events and finished with 532 points, followed by Howard (466), Georgetown (460), American (418) and Mount St. Mary's (402).
On the women's side, the team of
Jacquee Clabeaux,
Leah Riley,
Ali Tyler and
Shannon Judge won the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.59). In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the combination of
Madison Nalls,
Emma DeJong,
Anka Whelan and
Angelina Zeidan touched the wall first (7:46.84).
In the 3x100 backstroke relay, the team of Tyler, Whelan and Judge took the top spot (2:50.44). The Patriots also placed second in the 3x100 butterfly relay, 3x100 breaststroke relay, 500-yard freestyle relay and 100-yard freestyle relay.
Clabeaux, Tyler, Whelan and DeJong won the 400-yard medley relay (3:57.12).
Peyton Brehmer, Tyler, Judge and Clabeaux claimed the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.08).
On the men's side at last year's Potomac Relays, the team of
Danny Schwabauer,
Tate Anderson,
Joshua Hochard and
Zachary Kopel won the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Josh Fletcher,
Zane Roberts, Anderson and Schabauer took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle (4:07.90).
The Patriots also placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle relay (9:31.67) and the 3x100 backstroke relay (2:34.40). Mason took second in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 3x100 butterfly relay.

The Mason men's team has 16 returners and nine newcomers on the roster under interim head coach
Jamie Greenwood.
The Patriots' men's team begins the season with two seniors, five juniors and nine sophomores returning from last year's roster. The returners will be joined by nine newcomers for the 2023-24 season.

THE PATRIOTS SCHEDULE
The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete in eight events during the 2023-24 season, with three events at home including the annual Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The Patriots will open the campaign against American, Georgetown, Howard and Mount St. Mary's at the Potomac Relay Invitational (Sept. 22), hosted by American University at the Reeves Aquatic Center in Washington, D.C.
Mason will then travel to take on Towson (Oct. 7) at Burdick Pool in Towson, Md.
The Patriots face Atlantic 10 Conference opponents for the first time at the Richmond Duals (Oct. 13-14) held in Hampton, Va. Mason will face Davidson, Duquesne and Richmond in the two-day meet.
The Patriots return home for a two-day meet against Duquesne and La Salle (Oct. 27-28) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Mason stays in Fairfax to host the annual Patriot Invitational (Nov. 16-18) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The Patriots will compete at the U.S. Open (Nov. 29-Dec. 2) in Greensboro, N.C.
The 2024 portion of the schedule begins with the Patriots on the road against James Madison and Fairfield (Jan. 13) in Harrisonburg, Va. The final road dual of the season has Mason at Old Dominion (Jan. 20) in Norfolk, Va.
The Patriots conclude the regular season with a home dual against UMBC (Jan. 27).
The Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held Feb. 21-24 at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.
The NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., while the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by the University of Indiana in Indianapolis, Ind.
