LAST TIME OUT

The Patriots are coming home from a two-game road trip that saw them play against Towson last Thursday evening and Maryland the following Sunday afternoon.

Towson jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but redshirt senior defender Kolbrun Eyjolfsdottir cut the deficit in half after her header off a free kick went in the net in the 17th minute. Mason would not be able to complete the comeback, however, as the score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game. The Towson victory marked the first win over George Mason in almost two decades, dating back to October 26, 2003.

Maryland proved to be Mason's toughest test yet, as the Patriots lost to the Terrapins 3-0. Before Sunday's game, Maryland had four consecutive 1-1 draws to their name. Maryland broke out to an early lead after a goal in the 15th minute, and they never looked back. Two more goals were scored in the 37th and 89th minutes. Sunday's loss marked the fourth consecutive loss to Maryland. The last Mason victory over the Terrapins was September 11, 2016, when the Patriots won 5-2.

SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA

The Pirates are currently on a four-game unbeaten streak heading into Fairfax. They are coming off a 1-0 win over UNC Wilmington last Thursday evening and played Virginia Commonwealth to a scoreless draw the following Sunday afternoon. Before that draw, the Pirates were on a three-game win streak that saw them shut out their opponents with a combined score of 6-0.

Because of their defensive efforts, sophomore defender/midfielder Abby Sowa was named the American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the week for the second consecutive week. Junior goalkeeper Maeve English was named Goalkeeper of the Week for her recently recorded shutouts.

East Carolina's finished their 2021 season 8-9-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the American Athletic Conference.

HISTORY WITH THE PIRATES

Mason's first game against East Carolina was the Pirates' inaugural game on September 4, 1994, when the Patriots swamped the Pirates 13-0. Not to be outdone, the 1995 Patriots beat the Pirates again 14-0, a record that still stands today as the largest margin of victory in the history of George Mason women's soccer. Mason leads the head-to-head matchups against East Carolina with an 8-3-0 record.

The last time these two teams met was on September 2, 2018, when the Patriots won 2-1 at home. The two teams played each other in 2019, however the game was cancelled after the first half due to bad weather conditions.
