LAST TIME OUT
The Patriots finished non-conference action last Sunday, September 11, in New Jersey where the Princeton Tigers defeated the Patriots, 4-1.
After Princeton scored a goal off a corner kick in the first two minutes of the match, Mason's junior forward
Shea Carroll leveled the game by netting her first goal of the season in the 20
th minute. Her goal was made possible by a perfectly placed lob from freshman midfielder
Rachel Eberly that dropped the ball behind the Tiger defense that was caught on their heels. Carroll took the opportunity and broke away from the last defender, and with only the keeper to beat, she slotted her shot to the bottom left corner of the goal.
Princeton would recover, however, and scored the go-ahead goal ten minutes later. The Tigers ultimately added two insurance goals late in the game.
COACH PUPPIONE'S OUTLOOK
Head coach
Manya Puppione is ready for the start of A-10 action and what the Patriots will bring to the field.
"Our team is in a really good place going into our first conference game at GW," said Coach Puppione, "Leading up to this point, we have learned a lot about who we are. We have grown stronger together on and off the field."
For the next ten games, the Patriots will be playing against in-conference opponents. Coach Puppione sees this as an exciting opportunity for her team to grow.
"The start of the conference season is so exciting because we are both 0-0 and every game is a battle. I'm looking forward to what we are going to bring tomorrow afternoon."
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
The Colonials are entering their conference schedule with a six-game unbeaten streak. They have won the last two games with a combined 7-1 score. Graduate student Rachel Sorkenn leads the team with five goals this season. In the last two games, she scored two goals against Saint Peter's and one goal against Howard. Her recent offensive production earned her Student-Athlete of the Week honors by George Washington.
George Washington has scored a total of nine goals this season, with their opponents only scoring two. Other than Sorkenn's hot start, four other Colonials have scored one goal on the season.
George Washington finished its 2021 season 3-12-3 overall and 3-6-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
HISTORY WITH THE COLONIALS
Because of their proximity to each other, the Patriots and Colonials have faced off against each other quite often since George Washington started their women's soccer program in 1993. In those thirty years, Mason has dominated the head-to-head matchups with a 23-3-4 record. Mason's 23 wins against George Washington is more than any other school they have faced in its program's history.
The last time the Revolutionary Rivalry was played was two seasons ago, during the shortened season of 2020-21. In that season, where the majority of the games were in-conference games, the Patriots faced off against the Colonials twice. The teams split the season series, with
Mason winning the first game 2-1 and
George Washington winning the second game three weeks later 1-0.
