RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its final game of the weekend, falling to Richmond, 12-5, on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
Mason (3-8) took the lead in the first inning against Richmond (6-4) sophomore starter Jacob Marcus.
With two outs, first baseman
Scott Morgan launched his third home run of the season, a solo blast over the center field fence to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
That would be the lone hit for the Patriots over the first five innings.
Richmond responded in the home half of the first against Mason starter
Ryan Stoudemire. With two outs, the Spiders put together three straight singles. Junior catcher Drew Blakely singled and went to third on a base hit by graduate student right fielder Austin Masel. Graduate student first baseman Dan Leckie then drove in Blakely from third with a single to right field to tie the score, 1-1.
The Spiders scored two runs in each of the next three innings and eight unanswered runs overall.
In the second, senior center fielder Anthony Forte tripled in a run and Blakely knocked in a run with a double to give Richmond a 3-1 advantage.
In the third, graduate student second baseman Chris Rinaldi plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Forte delivered with a RBI-single to make it 5-1.
The fourth inning saw Spiders freshman shortstop Jared Spraug-Lott drive in a pair of runs with a single off Mason reliever
Jonathan Kaiser to extend the lead to 7-1. The Spiders scored a single run in the eighth on a wild pitch for an 8-1 lead.
The Patriots got a run back in the top of the sixth. Sophomore outfielder
South Trimble, on to pinch hit, doubled with one out. With two outs, Morgan doubled to left-center, with Trimble scoring on the play to cut the lead to 8-2.
In the home half of the sixth, Spraugue-Lott drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to put the Spiders up 9-2.
In the seventh, Mason infielder
Brett Stallings drove in his first run of the season with a ground-out, but the Spiders scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning against
Nick Zegna for a 12-3 lead.
Richmond scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings.
DeLongchamps and Morgan knocked in runs with RBI-doubles in the eighth to trim the lead to 12-5, but that's as close as the Patriots would get.
For the Patriots, Stoudemire (1-3) allowed five earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings and took the loss. Kaiser gave up three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Zegna surrendered four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, while classmate
Stuart Barrett tossed one scoreless frame.
For the Spiders, Marcus allowed one on one hit in 3.1 innings in the no-decision. Graduate student Nolan Collins (2-0) got the win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings. Sophomore Colin Lowe gave up four earned runs on six hits in 3.0 innings, and junior Jared DeLarso tossed one scoreless.
Morgan went 3-for-4 with his third home run, two doubles and three RBI. Trimble was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. DeLongchamps finished 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.
The Patriots score five runs on 12 hits, while the Spiders scored 12 runs on 19 hits. Richmond scored seven runs with two outs, going 9-for-17 in the game with two down. Every player in the starting lineup for the Spiders either scored a run or drove in a run.
The Patriots are back in action on Friday, March 26, on the road at Towson with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in Towson, Md.
