BALTIMORE, Md. – The George Mason women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season over UMBC in five sets on Friday night. The Patriots split the opening day of the Retriever Challenge, falling to Delaware earlier in the day.
Mason moves to 1-3 on the season while the Retrievers drop to 2-3. The Patriots wrap up the Retriever Challenge with an 11 a.m. match against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday at the UMBC Event Center in Baltimore, Md.
"Tonight was a hard fought team effort," said head coach
Aylene Ilkson. "We had so many different players step in and contribute which was amazing for this young group. We have a lot of work to do but this is certainly getting us on the path to a successful future."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – UMBC (25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 12-25, 15-11)
- The Patriots used an 8-0 scoring run, powered by four service aces from Erin Derick, to claim the first set, 25-19.
- Mason had its highest hitting percentage in the third set of play, .333, resulting in a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The Patriots posted 15 total blocks compared to UMBC's 19. Peyton Ehmke led the defense at the net with five blocks, one solo.
- Mason opened the fifth set on a 7-0 scoring run, allowing the Patriots to take the final set, 15-9.
- Derick posted career bests in assists (49), blocks (3) and aces (4).
- Senior Kelly Fagan tabbed a career-high 10 kills while freshman Stephanie Der posted a personal best 21 digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – Delaware (17-25, 19-25, 20-25)
- Delaware used a 6-0 scoring run in the first set to open its lead, 12-6. The Blue Hens claimed the first set, 25-17.
- The Blue Hens went on a 10-1 scoring run in the second set of play, resulting in UD taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
- Mason opened the final set on a 6-1 scoring run. The Blue Hens responded with a late run of their own, including scoring the final five points of the set.
- Der posted a personal-best five of Mason's six service aces.
- The Patriots were outblocked 13 to three.
- Mason was held to a .167 hitting percentage while UD hit .326 in the match.
