COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The George Mason women's volleyball team defeated Maryland for the first time since 2002 on Saturday afternoon at XFINITY Center Pavilion in College Park, Md. The Patriots powered past the Terps in a five-set showdown – 28-26, 15-25, 25-23, 9-25, 16-14.
Mason (3-6) split the final day of the Maryland Invitational, later falling to Arkansas in four sets.
The Patriots return to Fairfax, Va., for the Mason Invitational on Sept. 20-21. Wake Forest, Seton Hall and William & Mary will participate in the two-day, six-match tournament.
Sophomore opposite
ShaLi Niu posted 23 total kills, five aces and nine blocks over the two matches. She registered a team-high 17 kills and career-high four service aces against Maryland. Fellow sophomore
Siron Hardy recorded 28 total kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Hardy put down a career-high 16 kills in Mason's four-set loss to Arkansas.

Erin Derick provided an all-around performance with 63 total assists, 15 digs and eight blocks on the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – Maryland
- Mason claimed a five-set, thrilling victory over Maryland – 28-26, 15-25, 25-23, 9-25, 16-14.
- Maryland went on a 6-0 scoring run in the first set, including three straight service aces. The Patriots responded with three consecutive points to tie the set, 24 all. Mason ultimately claimed the first stanza in extra points, 28-26.
- Mason hit -.143 in the second set, dropping the frame to the Terps 25-15.
- The Patriots finished the third set on a 5-0 scoring run, including back-to-back blocks and two aces from Niu, to take the frame 25-23.
- The Terps outhit the Patriots .348 to -.095 in the fourth set as Mason dropped the stanza 25-9.
- Mason was down 8-4 in the fifth set but fought its way back to claim the victory in five, 16-14.
- The Patriots outblocked the Terps, 16 to 13. Peyton Ehmke and Derick each recorded seven blocks in the win.
- Freshman Stephanie Der posted 15 digs on defense while senior Bailey Williams added 12 digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – Arkansas
- In their first matchup in over 22 years, the Razorbacks came out on top, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 14-25).
- After dropping the opening set, Mason responded with a 25-19 second-set win behind a set-high 13 team kills.
- Arkansas outhit the Patriots, .271 to .152, in the match.
- Niu and freshman Jewel Clark each posted seven blocks, lifting Mason to a 10.5 to nine overall advantage in blocks.
- Siron Hardy tabbed a career-high 16 kills on a .333 clip, adding eight digs and two blocks.
