FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team starts their 2019 home slate on Thursday, Aug. 29, as they host Kentucky (0-0-2), with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
In George Mason's first fall semester
Game of the Week , this will be the first time the two programs have played one another in the regular season.
The Patriots (0-1-0) opened their 2019 season on Sunday in Norfolk, Va. against Old Dominion, falling to the Monarchs by a score of 3-1. Redshirt junior
Emily Bradshaw (
@embradshaw_24) netted the lone goal for the Patriots in the 85
th minute with help from senior
Gabriela Rivera (
@GabyRivera55) and sophomore
Emma van der Vorst (
@EvdV_070), who both earned an assist.
Despite the loss, the Patriots finished with a 12-8 advantage over the Monarchs in shots, including four shots in the first 16 minutes of play, the same amount Old Dominion gave up in fulltime in their season opener. Mason also ended with a 4-3 edge over Old Dominion in shots on goal. Mason will look to get scoring chances like that again against the Wildcats.
Kentucky has had an irregular start to their 2019 campaign, as they have tied with their opponents in the first two matches of the season, being one of only six programs in the nation to do so.
In their last outing, the Wildcats finished at a stalemate with Western Kentucky after two overtime periods on Sunday. Kentucky held possession of the ball for 59 percent of the game, along with holding Western Kentucky to two shots on goal. Forwards Miranda Jimenez and Hannah Richardson led the Wildcat offense with two shots on goal apiece.
The Wildcats, who had an overall record of 5-14-0, 1-9-0 in SEC play last season, bring on 15 newcomers (14 freshmen and one transfer student) to the 2019 roster.
