GREENVILLE, N.C. – The George Mason women's soccer team opens the 2019 season on the road against East Carolina on Thursday with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Johnson Stadium.

This will be the third consecutive season where the Patriots started the season on the road.

Mason finished the 2018 season with a 14-6-0 overall record (8-2-0 A-10) and reached the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Green and Gold were selected third in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches' poll last week. Aside from the projected first place program, the Patriots were the only other program to receive a first place vote.

Mason returns 18 student-athletes from the 2018 season, including freshman forward Emma van der Vorst who was selected to the 2019 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team.

van der Vorst earned 2018 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors after leading the Patriots in goals (14), points (32), shots (62) and shots on goal (33) last season. Junior forward Kayla Hamric tied for third on the team in goals (3) and assists (3) in 2018.

The team also added six newcomers to the roster.

The group includes freshmen Kalani Peart (London, England), Jenna Hutchison (Columbia, Md.), Kaitlyn Butcher (Fredericksburg, Va.), Abigail Gonzalez (Forest, Va.), Grace Hotaling (Delmar, N.Y.) and University of Arkansas transfer Kolbrún Eyjólfsdóttir (Iceland).

East Carolina finished the 2018 season with a 10-6-3 overall record and posted a 5-4-0 record in conference play. The team also earned a spot in the American Athletic Conference Championship Semifinals last November.

The Pirates were picked to finish fifth in the American Athletic Conference's preseason coaches' poll. The team includes senior defender Jayda Hylton-Pelaia, who was named the American Athletic Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The Patriots hold an overall record of 8-3 against the Pirates. The two programs met last year, where Mason recorded a 2-1 victory at home in George Mason Stadium.
