AUSTIN, Texas - Five members of the George Mason University track & field team are in the Lone Star State this week to compete on the grandest stage of the sport during the annual NCAA Championships.
The event returns to Austin for the first time since 2004 and will feature four days of competition, with wall-to-wall coverage on the ESPN Family of Networks.
Four members of the Mason men's team will race in the 4x400m relay Wednesday, while senior
Sarah Moore will compete on the women's side Thursday.
The relay team took Jacksonville by storm during last month's NCAA preliminary in Jacksonville, blitzing past seven powerhouse track programs to qualify for Austin while posting the No. 10 time out of the 24 qualifying relay teams. It's Mason's first relay team to make the NCAA Championship since 2014.
Made up of seniors
Rico Gomez and
Junias Agyei, and juniors
Evander Pierre and
Tyler Benson, the Patriot relay squad, which captured the A-10 indoor and outdoor titles in 2018-19, will race live on ESPN2 Wednesday night. The 4x400m relay is scheduled for 8:18 p.m. (ET), and the Patriots will suit up in heat three of three. The top-2 teams in each heat, plus the next two fastest times advance to Friday's championship final.
Then, on Thursday, Moore returns to the NCAA Championship track after gaining valuable experience in the event during the 2018 meet in Eugene, Oregon. The Silver Spring, Md., native qualified for Austin after running a 52.74 during her 400m quarterfinal. A 13-time A-10 champion and the 2018-19 A-10 title winner in both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash, Moore will look to end her legendary Mason career in solid fashion this week. She placed 20th in her NCAA Championship debut in 2018.
Moore races Thursday at 9:30 p.m. (ET) in the first of three heats on ESPNU. The top-2 finishers in each heat, plus the next two fastest times move on to Saturday's final.
