FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team rounded out its Atlantic 10 home series against St. Bonaventure with a dominating 8-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots earned their second straight series win to improve to 21-25 overall and 9-11 in A-10 play.
Mason will conclude the regular season at home with a series against UMass on May 4-5. Sunday's series finale will be Senior Day and Alumni Day.
Liz Seymour and
Jess Curbeira will be honored with a pregame ceremony. There will also be a post-game potluck for alumni of the program.
After a strong performance in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, redshirt junior
Marina Vitalich impressed once again in a complete-game effort. The reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven batters against two walks. She leads Mason's pitching staff with a 9-5 record.
Although St. Bonaventure scored the first run of the game, Mason would respond with eight unanswered runs to cruise to victory. In the bottom of the first, Curbeira and
Taylor Dadig notched RBI singles to give Mason the early 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth,
Marissa Butts singled up the middle with one out.
Saige Cisler came in to pinch run, stealing second and later scoring on a wild pitch. Seymour started the fifth inning with a bunt for a base hit and scored on a SBU fielding error.
Heading into the sixth inning, Mason led 4-1. The Patriots then went on to score four runs on two hits and two walks in the sixth frame. With the bases loaded,
Sydnee Wells and
Adriana Erickson drew back-to-back walks to bring in two runs. Curbeira sent in Wells with a sacrifice fly while Dadig tabbed her third RBI with a single to left field, giving Mason the 8-1 win.
Mason currently sits in seventh place in league standings. With one final weekend of play, the Patriots will have one last chance to qualify for the A-10 Championships.
