FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against St. Bonaventure to move to 20-25 overall and 8-11 in league play. The Patriots fell in game one, 6-5, but responded with a commanding 5-1 victory in game two.
The rubber match of the series will take place at noon on Sunday at the George Mason Softball Complex.
In game one, junior
Bekah Ansbro recorded the loss to drop to 8-10 on the season. The pitcher gave up three runs on three hits to go along with three walks. Relief pitcher
Haellie Gordon allowed three runs to cross the plate in 3.1 innings of work. SBU's Alyssa Yungwirth relieved starter Rylee Hehir in the first inning and went on to pitch the whole game for her first win of the season.
Mason registered 10 hits compared to SBU's seven but ultimately stranded 11 runners on base. Freshman
Anna DiMari had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a RBI.
Adriana Erickson and
Liz Seymour each recorded two hits while Seymour added a run and RBI.
The Patriots managed to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Bonnies would score at least one run in the next five innings to take a 6-3 lead. Mason scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but its rally came up just short, falling 6-5.
Redshirt junior
Marina Vitalich tied her season-high 10 strikeouts to lead Mason to victory in game two, 5-1. She gave up one run on six hits in a complete-game effort to improve to 8-5 overall.
The Patriots capitalized on three SBU fielding errors to score runs in the first and third innings. Later, sophomore
Meghan Graham tabbed a leadoff double in the fifth inning. Erickson brought her home with a double to center field for Mason's final run of the game. The Patriots' offense hit three doubles in the game - Graham, Erickson and Curbeira.
Erickson and Curbeira each finished with two RBIs and a hit in the contest. Graham and
Sydnee Wells had a productive game of baserunning, crossing home plate two times.
