FAIRFAX, VA. – The George Mason softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against La Salle to earn its first Atlantic 10 series win of the season. The Patriots took two-of-three to improve to 19-23 overall and 7-10 in Atlantic 10 play.
Sophomore
Haellie Gordon dealt a complete-game shutout in game two to earn her fourth victory of the season. The pitcher struck out a season-high five batters while giving up only two hits. La Salle's Morgan Orlowski gave up three runs to record the loss, dropping to 3-14 overall.
Mason's scoring was done in the third and fifth innings. In the third frame, junior
Sydnee Wells started off the scoring with a RBI single to left field. Jess Curbiera also drove in a run in the inning to give Mason the early 2-0 advantage.
After the Patriots loaded the bases in the fifth inning, Curbeira stepped up once again with a sacrifice fly to left field. Despite a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, La Salle flied out and grounded into a double play to end the game.
Curbeira and Erickson finished game two 2-for-2 at the plate while
Liz Seymour and
Alyssa Lawton each added a hit in the contest.
In the first game of the twin bill, Mason was shut out in a 1-0 loss to the Explorers. La Salle pitcher Cailey Joyce hit the game-winning home run in the second inning. Joyce tossed a complete-game shutout to move to 7-11 overall.
Mason totaled seven hits in the contests compared to La Salle's five; but ultimately left nine runners on base.
Bekah Ansbro drops to 8-9 overall despite striking out seven batters.
The Patriots remain at home with a game against Georgetown on Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m. at the George Mason Softball Complex.
