FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team swept its midweek doubleheader against Coppin State on Thursday afternoon. The Patriots defeated the Eagles 3-1 and 6-0 to improve to 15-19 overall.
Mason hits the road for a three-game series against Saint Joseph's on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for noon in Philadelphia, Pa.
In game one of the doubleheader, redshirt junior
Marina Vitalich led Mason to victory in the circle. The pitcher reached a new season-high nine strikeouts. She gave up no runs and only one walk to improve to 6-4 this season. Sophomore relief pitcher
Kate Owsley gave up Coppin State's lone run of the game.

Meghan Graham ignited Mason's offense in game one, going 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot. Graham scored Mason's first run of the game after a single by
Adriana Erickson.
Sydnee Wells also crossed the plate on the play after a throwing error by the catcher.

Marissa Butts notched a two-out RBI single to extend Mason's lead, 3-1.
In game two of the doubleheader, starting pitcher
Haellie Gordon shut out the Eagles, giving up only one hit in 4.0 innings of work. She earned the win to improve to 2-8 overall. Relief pitcher
Bekah Ansbro struck out five batters against one walk in 3.0 innings of work.
The scoring in game two happened in the first and second innings. With the bases loaded, Wells drew a walk to plate Mason's first run of the game. Then freshman
Anna DiMari stepped up with a two RBI single, giving Mason the 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second frame, Erickson hit a base-clearing 3 RBI double to extend the lead, 6-0.
Saige Cisler went 3-for-3 at the plate while
Madison Aker and Seymour contributed a hit in game two.
The Patriots committed no errors in both contests, providing stability behind their pitchers. Mason will look to carry the momentum into its three-game series against Saint Joseph's on April 13-14.
