FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's volleyball team will conclude the regular season with a pair of matches at Harvard this weekend. The Patriots (15-8, 8-4) take on the Crimson at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at the Malkin Athletic Center in Cambridge, Mass.
Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
Mason went 1-1 last weekend, falling to Saint Francis on April 5 but responding with a sweep over Penn State the following night. Mason swept the season series over Penn State for the first time since 1984. It marked the first time in program history the Patriots swept the Nittany Lions in both matchups in a season.
EIVA TOURNAMENT
The Patriots clinched a playoff spot in the EIVA Tournament with their sweep over Penn State on April 6. Mason currently holds the four seed in the EIVA Tournament but with the top three teams all seeing each other this weekend, seeding has yet to be finalized.
VELEZ HONORED
Redshirt sophomore setter
Luis Velez was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his performances from April 1-7. He totaled 67 assists, 15 digs, five kills and three blocks in a pair of matches. He guided Mason to a season-best .514 hitting percentage against PSU with 36 assists and nine digs. Four Patriots have earned an EIVA weekly honor this season.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard: 6-14, 5-7 EIVA
Harvard is currently on a four-match losing streak with recent losses to Princeton and NJIT. After Mason's win over Penn State and Harvard's loss to NJIT on April 6; the Crimson were eliminated from playoff contention. Harvard sits in fifth place in league standings.
Harvard has suffered three five-set loss to conference opponents. The Crimson most recently forced five sets with conference leader Princeton on April 5. Overall, Harvard has played seven five-set matches this season, claiming only one victory.
The Crimson will honor its lone senior Trevor Dow before Saturday's match. Dow sits fourth in program history in solo blocks (62), blocks assists (241) and total blocks (303). Harvard is also led by Matthew Ctvrtlik. The setter is third in the conference with 700 total assists and 8.86 assists per set.
