Tallied a career-high 46 assists in an upset victory over then-eighth-ranked Penn State in April 3... Earned 27 assists and a season-high nine digs in a win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on March 26... Tallied 31 assists in a road victory over Charleston (W.Va.) on March 13... Finished with a career-high four service aces in a victory over Charleston (W.Va.) on March 12... 2020: Played in four matches (15 sets played), recording 22 assists and 22 digs… Tallied 18 assists, four digs, one kill and one total block versus UCLA on Jan. 4… An injury sidelined Velez for a good portion of the season, before returning to action on Feb. 28 at Penn State where the redshirt junior tallied eight digs… Notched five digs and two assists at Saint Francis on Feb. 29… Recorded five digs, three receptions and two assists versus Charleston (W.Va.) on March 7.
2019: All-EIVA Honorable Mention...Two-time EIVA Defensive Player of the Week…Transitioned into the team’s starting setter, totaling 574 assists for 8.08 assists per set…Notched two double-doubles against Ohio State (Jan. 18) and Sacred Heart (March 2)…Boasted career bests in digs (14) and blocks (4) to go along with 44 assists in Mason’s four-set win over SHU…Dished out a career-high 45 assists vs. NJIT (March 30)…Reached over 40 assists for the third time with 44 assists in the EIVA Semifinals vs. Penn State (April 18).
2018: Made three appearances as the starting setter - the first three matches of the season... Season high 39 assists vs. No. 15 GCU (Jan. 6)... Season high two blocks vs. No. 15 GCU (Jan. 6 and 7)... Five aces on the season, most notably the point that clinched the match vs. Barton (Feb. 9)...
2017: Redshirted his first year at Mason and could not make his debut for the Patriots...
PREP: Another talent who arrives from Puerto Rico, Luis Velez brings with him plenty of high school, club, and international experience. The setter helped Colegio La Piedad to finish among the top three teams in the LACC conference in each of his four years as a Viking, highlighting his high school career with a LACC championship in 2014. Velez continued his success at the club level with Borinquen Coqui, with which he won several tournaments and made five all-tournament appearances, in addition to being named All-American at the 2014 USA Volleyball Junior National Championship in Houston, Texas, where Borinquen Coqui placed third. In 2015, the setter captained the Boys' Youth A1 White Team at the USAV High Performance Tournament and made Puerto Rico's extended roster for the Boys' Under-19 World Championship in Argentina before making the decision to continue the Velez legacy with the Patriots.
PERSONAL: Son of Luis Velez and Geraldine Cerame and the younger brother of Paco Velez, who played a key role in Mason's volleyball success for the past five years. Luis majors in Criminology and enjoys the beach, Netflix, hanging out with friends, and shooting hoops.
