FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team split two games on the second day of the Cherry Blossom Classic. Mason won its first game of the day, 1-0, over Lafayette; but fell to Monmouth 4-2. The Patriots now sit at 4-8 overall.
Junior pitcher
Bekah Ansbro threw her first career no-hitter in Mason's 1-0 win over Lafayette. It marked Mason's first no-hitter since March 6, 2016 (vs. Army) when redshirt junior
Marina Vitalich tabbed her first career no-no.
After Mason's first two games of the Cherry Blossom Classic were canceled due to snow on Friday, the Patriots responded with a strong showing in their first game of the tournament. Against Lafayette, Ansbro was unstoppable on the mound, throwing her first career no-hitter. She collected four strikeouts on the day and only allowed two walks.
The Patriots' scoring was done in the first inning of play. After sophomore
Meghan Graham reached base on a fielding error; she managed to advance to third thanks to passed ball. Redshirt
Adriana Erickson stepped up for the Patriots with a triple down the right field line to score Graham.
Junior
Sydnee Wells made her 2019 debut against Lafayette, collecting a hit in the second inning. Graham also added a hit in the third inning. In a low scoring affair, it was Ansbro who led the Patriots to victory. In the final inning, she struck out a batter swinging and retired two on ground outs for her first career no-hitter. She improved to 2-3 on the season.
In its second game of the day, Mason fell to Monmouth 2-1. The Patriots were able to score a run in the bottom of the first off an Erickson single down the left field line, scoring Wells. The RBI evened the score 1-1. Monmouth then claimed a 2-1 lead in the third inning after back-to-back singles.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own. A single by senior
Liz Seymour scored freshman
Taylor Dadig to even the score 2-2. After a two-run, three-hit fifth inning by Monmouth, the Hawks took control 4-2 and never looked back.
Haellie Gordon recorded the loss to drop to 0-4 this season.
