FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team split its final two games of the Cherry Blossom Classic on Sunday. The Patriots picked up a 3-0 win over Lafayette but fell to Marshall, 5-4. Mason improves to 5-9 this season.
Up next, the Patriots host their final home tournament on March 15-17 at the George Mason Softball Complex. Mason will welcome East Carolina, Sacred Heart and Cornell for the three-day tournament.
In Mason's opening game of the day, the Patriots found themselves down 1-0 after Marshall hit an RBI triple in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the frame, senior
Liz Seymour took advantage of a catching error to score Mason's first run. After two, the game was tied 1-1. In the bottom of the third,
Madison Aker and
Adriana Erickson notched singles to help Mason take the 3-1 lead.
Marshall responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to even the score once again, 3-3.
Sydnee Wells hit a single to score
Alyssa Lawton in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving Mason the 4-3 advantage. Ultimately, Marshall would score a run in the sixth and seventh inning to claim the win, 5-4. Pitcher
Bekah Ansbro dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
In the final game of the day, Mason shutout Lafayette for its fifth win this season. Sophomore
Haellie Gordon (1-4) recorded her first win of the season and added four strikeouts in the victory. Mason's scoring was done in the third and fifth innings. Singles by
Taylor Dadig and
Anna DiMari ignited Mason's offense in the third. Lawton followed with a bunt, scoring Mason's first run. Wells used a sacrifice fly to extend the lead, 2-0. Later in the fifth inning, Lawton singled up the middle to plate the final run of the game.
