FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team went the distance on Friday night, but ultimately came up short against Rhode Island in five sets. The Patriots used a balanced attack to take the second and third stanzas, but the Rams claimed the fifth and final set, 15-8.
Mason drops to 4-21 overall and 0-13 in conference play with one match remaining. The Rams improve to 8-17 overall and 3-10 in league play.
The Patriots saw solid contributions all around as several players stepped up in the match. Senior
Bailey Williams tabbed her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore
ShaLi Niu added 12 kills, nine digs and six blocks while fellow sophomore
Peyton Ehmke posted seven blocks, tying her season-high.
Coming off the bench, sophomore
Katie Parmalee hit a career-high .462 in the match with seven kills to go along with four blocks. Freshman
Jewel Clark tied her season-high seven blocks while
Alessia Del Romano added six kills and nine digs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Freshman Stephanie Der recorded 27 digs, one shy of her career high. The Patriots registered 82 total digs – its second highest mark of the season.
- Mason outblocked Rhode Island, 14 to nine.
- Running a 6-2, sophomore Erin Derick dished out 26 assists while junior Emily Konchan posted 17 assists.
- Both teams hit below .200, with Mason registering a clip of .156. The Patriots notched its highest clip in the second set, .294, with 12 kills and only two attacking errors.
- The Rams finished the first set on a 11-2 run to take the stanza, 25-13. Mason was held to a set-low clip of .050.
- With Der behind the service line, Mason rattled off five straight points to claim the second set, 25-16. The Patriots posted six of their 14 blocks in the second stanza.
- The Patriots fought off a late surge from the visiting team to claim the third set, 25-20. Williams tabbed six of her 12 kills in the frame.
- With Mason leading 2-1 in the match, Rhode Island forced a fifth set with a 25-15 fourth-set win. The Rams hit .375 with 15 team kills compared to Mason's mark of .172 and eight team kills.
- Rhode Island opened the fifth set on a 7-2 run to force a Mason timeout. The hole proved too big for the Patriots to overcome as they dropped the decisive frame, 15-8.
