FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team held the lead at the half, but fell to No. 8 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Washington, D.C., but was moved to George Mason Stadium due to field conditions at Shaw Field.
"I first need to acknowledge and thank our groundskeepers here for the job that they did to get the field ready," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "I think it's a testament to the quality of our facility and playing surface we have that we could get a good game in today under tough conditions."
As heavy rain continued throughout the afternoon, Mason (4-3-0) took the lead late in the first half.
Freshman forward
Emma van der Vorst scored her fourth goal in as many games, converting with a header from 15 yards out off a free kick in the 39th minute to put the Patriots in front 1-0. Graduate student
Gabriela Rivera picked up the assist.
"Emma is playing really well for us right now," Bramble said. "We're playing her in a variety of different positions, so she's a versatile player."
Mason was unable to hold the lead, with Georgetown (5-0-2) scoring twice in a span of 14 minutes in the second half.
Hoyas senior forward Caitlin Farrell netted her third goal of the season, scoring the equalizer off a rebound from six yards out in the 58th minute.
Georgetown graduate student Kyra Carusa, who led all players with four shots on goal, scored her fourth goal of the season, finding the upper right corner for the eventual game-winner in the 72nd minute to put the Hoyas in front 2-1.
Georgetown hasn't allowed a goal against in the second half this season, outscoring opponents 6-0 over seven games.
"They were every bit as good as we thought they were going to be," Bramble said. "I'm really happy with how our team performed as well. I thought we performed better today in a loss than we did in our last game, which was a win."
The Patriots had their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Hoyas extended their winning streak to four games. Each of Mason's last four games and five of seven this season have been decided by one goal.
"It's keeping our players on the edge and they are having to stay focused," said Bramble. "That's definitely going to pay dividends when we get in tight games in conference play. I'm happy with the schedule that we put together this year and how the players have improved along the way against tough opponents."
Georgetown finished the game with a 23-4 advantage in shots, including 11-0 in the second half of play. The Hoyas had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hoyas had seven corner kicks, while the Patriots did not have a corner kick in the match.
Mason senior goalkeeper
Louisa Moser made the start and made two saves before leaving the game in the 34th minute due to an injury. Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Morgan Symmers (4-3-0) made four saves in 56 minutes and took the loss. Georgetown junior goalkeeper Lauren Gallagher (2-0-0) made two saves in the win.
The Patriots are back in action against UCF on Thursday, with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
