FAIRFAX, Va. – Mason redshirt-freshman
Olivia Reese scored her first career goal in the 63rd minute, lifting the Patriots to a 3-2 victory over James Madison on Thursday night at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (4-2-0) took an early lead over James Madison (1-5-0) less than five minutes into the contest.
Graduate student
Jewel Christian netted her first collegiate goal, sending a high shot from the top of the 18 just under the crossbar and into the net to put the Patriots in front 1-0. Mason freshman forward
Emma van der Vorst picked up her first career assist and redshirt-sophomore defender
Emily Bradshaw also had an assist on the tally.
"Jewel is still finding her game," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "I think she is going to get a lot better as the season goes on as well. She causes a lot of problems for the other team's outside back for sure and we are happy with where she is at this point in the season."
Shortly after the Patriots took the lead, the game was halted for 60 minutes due to lightning in the area.
When play resumed, the Patriots picked up where they left off.
In the 24th minute, van der Vorst scored her third goal in as many games, converting a cross from senior
Rebecca Callison from six yards out to increase the Patriots advantage to 2-0.
The Dukes then started their comeback, denting the scoreboard less than five minutes later when senior defender Hailey Stein scored in the 29th minute with a shot from six yards out to make it a one-goal game at the break.
James Madison erased the two-goal deficit when freshman Hannah Coulling scored her first career goal in the 48th minute off a set piece to even the game 2-2.
Reese netted the game-winner in the 63rd minute, scoring off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
Kayla Hamric for the 3-2 final.
"It's nice to win, we are in the results-oriented business," Bramble said. "It's important that we take care of business at home, but we're not satisfied with that performance tonight. We weren't ourselves tonight and we made the game harder than we needed to."
Mason has had four different players score a game-winner, while five players have netted their first NCAA goal over the first six games of the season, including Reese.
"Olivia is doing a really nice job in her role right now for us," said Bramble. "We recruited her to come here as a defender and we saw some qualities in her that we thought she would be a good attacking player. We're really pleased with her development."
The Patriots went 3-0-0 on their homestand, winning each game by a single goal.
The Patriots finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, including 15-3 in the first half. Both teams registered five shots on goal. Mason had eight corner kicks, while James Madison had two in the match.
Emma van der Vorst, who leads Mason in goals (3) and points (7), led all players with five shots in the game. She put two shots on goal and finished with a goal and an assist. Callison recorded four shots with one on goal and notched her team-leading third assist of the season.
The Patriots are back in action on Sunday, facing No. 8 Georgetown at 12 p.m at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
