FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason senior midfielder
Emily Littell scored twice, while graduate student
Jewel Christian tallied her second goal of the season in the Patriots 3-0 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (8-4-0, 3-1-0 A-10) took the lead over Davidson (2-9-0, 0-4-0 A-10) early in the first half.
Littell found the back of the net off a cross in the 20th minute, scoring from six yards out to put the Patriots in front 1-0. Senior forward
Nia Elbeck set up the goal with her second assist of the season.
The Patriots scored the first goal for the seventh straight match.
"I thought it was a pretty solid Sunday performance overall," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "Sunday's are always tough and Davidson is a team that always plays us tough. The thing I am most pleased with is how we controlled the ball. We limited any goal-scoring chances they had."
With Mason still leading by a goal, Christian increased the advantage with under 20 minutes remaining in the second half. She scored her second goal of the season, blistering a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 20 yards to increase the Mason lead to 2-0.
"We needed a special play like the one that Jewel made to break the game open," said Bramble. "We knew she was capable of scoring goals like that. You have to give credit to
Gabriela Rivera on that play as well, her transition to go and win the ball back was outstanding and Jewel made just a tremendous individual effort to put it away."
In the 89th minute, Littell netted her second goal of the game, finding the lower left corner to make the score 3-0. Freshman forward
Emma van der Vorst picked up an assist on the goal.
"Emily's not the player that gets talked about the most," Bramble said of his senior captain. "She can just do a little bit of everything at a really high level. I'm not surprised that she's scoring goals, but she does a lot of other great things for us as well."
Mason improved to 5-1-0 at home this season. The Patriots are 4-0-0 all-time against Davidson.
The Patriots finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots, including 6-2 in shots on goal. Mason had four corner kicks and Davidson had two in the game.
Littell, who became the sixth Mason player to register a game-winning goal this season, has scored three goals in the last two games.
Mason sophomore goaltender
Louisa Moser (1-1-0) made two saves to earn her first win of the season. Davidson junior goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu made three saves.
The Patriots are back in action on Thursday when they host Saint Joseph's, with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
