Emma Van der Vorst Sets Record In Patriots Victory Over Colonials

WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Mason freshman forward Emma van der Vorst set the program record for goals in consecutive games, scoring for the eighth straight match in the Patriots 2-0 victory over George Washington on Thursday at the GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.
 
"I don't think anyone expected this even though we knew she was a quality player," Mason head Todd Bramble said.  "We knew she was going to be an asset to our program.  She has a humble personality and she always has a team-first mentality.  She's a really hard worker and it's that attitude and approach that is contributing a lot to her success at this stage.  The players were very excited today when she scored that goal."
 
Mason (7-4-0, 2-1-0 A-10) scored both of its goals against George Washington (5-5-1, 1-2-0 A-10) in a span of just over eight minutes late in the first half.
 
Senior forward Emily Littell netted her first goal of the season in the 34th minute, with van der Vorst picking up the assist, to put the Patriots in front of the Colonials 1-0.
 
The Patriots have scored the first goal in each of the last six games.
 
"What I'm most pleased with from the team today is we came out strong against a really good George Washington team," Bramble said.  "The first 30 minutes of the game we spent the majority defending and our players did a really good job."
 
With time winding down in the first half, van der Vorst added to the Mason record books.  She scored the record-breaking goal in the 42nd minute of play in increase the Mason advantage to 2-0.  Redshirt sophomore defender Emily Bradshaw picked up the assist on the tally.

Jenn Gross (1993) and Katy Robertson (1999-00) each scored goals in seven consecutive games for the Patriots.
 
Redshirt junior goaltender Morgan Symmers (7-3-0) made a season-high five saves to earn the win before departing the game in the 60th minute. 
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Moser, appearing in her third game of the season, made a season-high four saves over the final 30 minutes of the match.
 
"I'm really happy that we got the shutout today, said Bramble.  "It was a gritty, gritty performance on the road and I'm proud of the effort of the players today."
 
The Patriots recorded their second shutout of the season and first since the season opener.

Senior goalkeeper Anna Tapen made six saves in the match for the Colonials.
 
George Washington finished with a 22-11 advantage in shots, while Mason had a 9-8 edge in shots on goal.  The Patriots had eight corner kicks and the Colonials had four in the game.
 
Mason evened its road record to 3-3-0 this season.  The Patriots improved to 22-2-3 all-time against George Washington.
 
The Patriots are back in action when they begin a two-game homestand against Davidson on Sunday, with the kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
