Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – George Mason freshman forward
Emma van der Vorst scored for the seventh consecutive game, equaling the program record for goals in consecutive games, but the Patriots dropped a 3-1 decision to VCU on Sunday afternoon at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
Mason (6-4-0, 1-1-0 A-10) scored the first goal of a match for the fifth straight contest when van der Vorst scored on a breakaway in the seventh minute to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
"That was a different kind of goal for her to score," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "It shows the natural instincts that she possesses. When that goal went in, I was hoping more than anything that it would give us a shot of adrenaline and energy."
Emma van der Vorst joins Jenn Gross (1993) and Katy Robertson (1999-00) as the only Mason women's soccer players in program history to score a goal in seven straight games.
VCU (7-2-0, 2-0-0 A-10) responded just nine minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Samantha Jerabek scored her first of two goals in the game off a cross in the 16th minute to make the score 1-1.
The teams remained tied at the break, with VCU holding a 14-3 advantage in shots.
The Rams struck just eight minutes into the second half. VCU junior defender Susanna Friedrichs scored her second goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage.
Jerabek added an insurance goal for the Rams late in the game, netting her second goal of the match from 20 yards out in the 89th minute to make the score 3-1.
The Rams finished with a 28-10 advantage in shots, while the Patriots had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Mason had four corner kicks and VCU had three in the game.
In addition to two shots on goal by van der Vorst,
Emily Bradshaw,
Kayla Hamric and
Dacheka Kolcum each recorded a shot on goal for the Patriots.
Jerabek scored two goals on two shots for the Rams, while VCU junior midfielder Alyssa Tallent picked up two assists in the match.
Mason redshirt junior goalkeeper
Morgan Symmers (6-3-0, 1-1-0 A-10) made one save, while Rams senior goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson (7-2-0, 2-0-0 A-10) made four saves in the game.
"I'm sure Morgan felt like she was under a ton of pressure today," Bramble said. "I think our whole team felt that way. We ended up having to defend really deep today and our back line had to block shots and battle for a lot of balls in the air."
The Patriots are back on the road Thursday against George Washington, with the kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
