Patriots Open Atlantic 10 Play Against Dayton on Thursday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team begins Atlantic 10 Conference play, hosting Dayton on Thursday with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
 
Last time out, Mason (5-3-0) defeated Central Florida, 3-1, on Thursday, Sept. 13 at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla.
 
The Patriots have won four of their last five games.
 
Mason freshman forward Emma van der Vorst scored a goal for the fifth straight game, which is tied for the second-longest goal scoring streak in program history.
 
Sophomore forward Jisca Adigo and sophomore midfielder Kayla Hamric each tallied their first goal of the season.  Mason forwards Jewel Christian, Nia Elbeck and Emily Littell each recorded an assist in the match.
 
Mason redshirt goalkeeper Morgan Symmers (5-2-0, 1.59) was named Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after turning in a solid performance against the Knights.  She finished with three saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the 70th minute of play.
 
Symmers is tied for the conference lead in wins by a goalkeeper (5), while van der Vorst is tied for second in the A-10 in goals (5) and tied for fifth in points (11).
 
Mason senior midfielder Rebecca Callison leads the Patriots in assists (3), with graduate student Gabriela Rivera, Christian and Hamric tied for second on the squad in assists (2).
 
Mason is 2-4-0 all-time against Dayton.  The Flyers defeated the Patriots 2-0 last season at Baujon Field in Dayton, Ohio. 
 
The Patriots and Flyers have met three times at George Mason Stadium, with each game decided by a single goal.  Mason earned a 2-1 victory over the Flyers on Oct. 2, 2016 in Dayton's last visit to Fairfax.

  • The Patriots have scored the first goal in three straight contests.

 SCOUTING DAYTON
 
Dayton has an overall record of 4-3-1.  The Flyers have a mark of 1-3-1 at home and 3-0-0 on the road this season.
 
Last time out, The Flyers were shutout at home by Xavier, 2-0 on Thursday.  The Musketeers finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots and held the Flyers to just two shots on goal.
 
Dayton has registered a victory in each of its first three road games.  The Flyers earned a 2-1 win against James Madison (Aug. 16), a 2-1 overtime victory over William & Mary (Aug. 19) and a 3-1 win at Eastern Michigan (Aug. 26).
 
Junior midfielder Micayla Livingston leads the Flyers in goals (4) and points (8), while freshman forward Izzy Greene is second on the squad in goals (2) and points (5).  Senior forward Quincy Kellett paces the club in assists (4).
 
In goal, senior Kaelyn Johns (4-3-1, 1.09) is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in saves (37).  She also ranks fourth in the conference in minutes played by a goalkeeper (745) and is fifth in save percentage (.804).
 
Among active goalkeepers, Johns is ranked fourth in the nation in minutes played (6,275) and is ninth in career saves (299).

Freshman Emma van der Vorst joins Lisa Gmitter (1986), Katy Roberstson (1999) and Tiana Kallenberger (2012) on the list of Mason players who have scored goals in five straight matches in program history.
 
The program record is seven straight games, held by both Jenn Gross (1993) and Katy Robertson (2000).
