ORLANDO, Fla. – Three different Mason players scored a goal, while redshirt junior goaltender
Morgan Symmers turned in a solid performance to lead the Patriots to a win in their final non-conference game of the season, 3-1 over Central Florida on Thursday evening at UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Mason (5-3-0) scored the first goal for the third straight game.
Sophomore midfielder Kayla Kamric netted her first goal of the season in the 11th minute, collecting a rebound off of a mishandled free kick by Central Florida (2-3-1) senior goaltender Vera Varis. Mason senior
Emily Littell picked up her first assist of the season.
Just six minutes later, UCF struck for the equalizer when freshman forward Kristen Scott scored on a header off a cross to make the score 1-1.
Mason freshman forward
Emma van der Vorst put the Patriots back in front in the 30th minute, blistering a shot just under the crossbar from 25 yards out to make it a 2-1 game. She has scored a goal in five consecutive games, tied for the second-longest goal scoring streak in program history.
"It's going to be hard to hide her talent much longer," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "She's playing consistently well for us right now which is the most important thing."
In the 66th minute, Mason sophomore forward
Jisca Adigo scored her first goal of the season, converting on a cross from senior forward
Nia Elbeck. Adigo sent a low shot past the Knights goalkeeper from the right side of the box to extend the Patriots advantage to 3-1. Elbeck picked up her first assist of the season on the play.
"All three goals were different," Bramble said. "Kayla's goal came off a set piece, Emma's goal came off an extended period of possession and Jisca's was off a classic counter attack. "
With the Patriots up by two, UCF was awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
Symmers then made a spectacular diving save, lunging to her left to swat the ball away and deny Knights sophomore forward Stefanie Sanders.
"It's a performance that we knew she was capable of and it certainly came at the right time tonight," Bramble said of the Patriots goalkeeper. "When you play against a team as talented as UCF, at some point throughout the game you are going to need your goaltender to make two or three big saves. That's exactly what Morgan did for us tonight."
Mason has won four of its last five games. The Patriots scored on three of their four shots on goal against the Knights on Thursday.
Symmers (5-2-0) registered three saves in the contest for the Patriots, while Varis (2-3-1) made one save for the Knights.
The Knights finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots, while both teams recorded four shots on goal in the match. UCF had eight corner kicks and Mason had two.
Mason improved to 6-1-1 all-time against UCF, including a 2-0-0 mark on the road.
Emma van der Vorst joins Lisa Gmitter (1986), Katy Robertson (1999) and Tiana Kallenberger (2012) on the list of Mason players who have scored goals in five straight matches in program history. The program record is seven straight games, held by both Jenn Gross (1993) and Katy Robertson (2000).
The Patriots are back in action when they host Dayton on Thursday, Sept. 20 with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
