Patriots Continue Homestand Against East Carolina on Sunday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team continues its homestand against East Carolina on Sunday, with the kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
 
Last time out, Mason (2-2-0) scored a pair of goals in the second half in a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion in the home opener on Thursday.  Freshman forward Emma van der Vorst tied the match with her first collegiate goal in the 48th minute, while sophomore midfielder Sara Chontosh tallied her first NCAA goal in the 74th minute to propel the Patriots to the win.
 
Mason graduate student Gabriela Rivera, Chontosh and van der Vorst share the team lead for goals (1) and points (2).
 
In goal, redshirt-junior Morgan Symmers (2-1, 1.52) has made six saves and recorded one shutout in three starts.
 
The Patriots last met the Pirates on Aug. 21, 2015.  Mason dropped a 2-0 decision to East Carolina in the season opener for both clubs at Johnson Stadium in Greenville, N.C.  The Pirates finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including 7-4 in shots on goal.
 
Mason is 7-3-0 all-time against East Carolina with five of the seven wins by shutout.  The Patriots are 5-1-0 all-time against the Pirates at George Mason Stadium, outscoring East Carolina by a combined score of 26-3.
 
SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
 
East Carolina finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 6-10-2, including a mark of 1-8-0 against American Athletic Conference opponents.  The Pirates went 4-3-2 at home and 2-7-0 on the road last season.
 
The Pirates are off to one of their best starts in program history.  East Carolina (3-0-2) has gone unbeaten in the first five games for just the second time.
 
East Carolina has scored 12 goals and allowed just four against over its first five games of the season.
 
Last time out, East Carolina scored two early goals on the way to a 3-0 victory over Richmond on Friday at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.  The Pirates outshot the Spiders 16-6, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. 
 
On the road this season, the Pirates have played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Old Dominion (Aug. 16), earned a 1-1 double-overtime result at then-No. 16 N.C. State (Aug. 23) and downed Richmond 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
 
East Carolina senior forward Courtney Cash and junior forward Jenna Dages are tied for the team lead in goals (3) and points (7).  Junior defender Jayda Hylton-Pelaia and sophomore midfielder Morgan Dewey share the team lead in assists (2).
 
In goal, redshirt-senior Melanie Stiles (3-0-2, 0.76 GAA) has stopped 13 of the 17 shots that she has faced in five games.

The Patriots have scored 10 or more goals in a match five times in program history, including a 13-0 win against East Carolina on Sept. 4, 1994 at George Mason Stadium and a 14-0 win over the Pirates on Sept. 10, 1995 in Greenville, N.C.
