The George Mason men's volleyball team won the program's first regular season EIVA championship in the modern era and set a new school record with 11 consecutive conference victories. Led by AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions
Hayden Wagner and
Brian Negron, the Patriots returned to the EIVA Tournament for the second time in head coach
Jay Hosack's three-year tenure.
Team Highlights
- George Mason finished with a 17-12 overall record with two top-15 victories. The first came in the Uvaldo Acosta Invitational against No. 14 Ball State (Jan. 28), with the other being a conference road match at No. 7 Penn State (Feb. 23). The victory against the Nittany Lions was just the second ever 3-0 win over Penn State in University Park, and the first in the regular season.
- The Patriots began the season with 11 consecutive EIVA victories to set a school record in that department. In that stretch, seven of the wins were in straight-sets, including the first three against NJIT (Feb. 16), Princeton (Feb. 17) and Penn State (Feb. 23).
- The 13-1 EIVA mark set a program record for the best single-season conference winning percentage. The success elevated Hosack's career EIVA record to 29-13 (.690), which is currently the best conference winning percentage among any George Mason men's volleyball head coach.
- The team finished first in the EIVA in assists (1189), assists per set (11.43), kills (1281) and kills per set (12.32) and cracked the top-10 nationally in kills per set. The Green and Gold also finished second in the conference in total blocks (221), service aces (150) and attack percentage (.270).
- The regular season EIVA championship is the program's first in the current alignment, as well as the first in the era of the regular season champion hosting the conference tournament (2000-present). Consequently, the EIVA Tournament was played at George Mason for the first time since 1994.
Individual Highlights
- Sophomore Hayden Wagner burst onto the NCAA men's volleyball scene by earning AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors. The recognition was complemented with a season that saw him named to the All-EIVA First-Team and take home two EIVA Offensive Player of the Week awards. The 6-6 opposite hitter logged three matches of 20 or more kills and led the team with 306 of them - becoming the 11th Patriot to tally at least 300 in a rally-scoring era season.
- Brian Negron completed his distinguished collegiate career with 891 assists (9.28 assists per set) and 27 service aces in 2018. His senior season portfolio was filled with AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors, the Uvaldo Acosta Memorial EIVA Player of the Year and a First-Team All-EIVA selection. Negron leaves his mark in the school record book with 3,684 career assists to rank second all-time.
- In his first season as an upperclassman, Kyle Barnes' game continued to progress into one of the conference's top-tier players. The outside hitter captured All-EIVA First-Team honors and had the highest attack percentage on the team among pin hitters. He notched a career-high 14 kills five times throughout the season and finished by posting at least 10 kills in seven of his final eight matches. The Virginia Beach, Va. native set career highs in kills (226), aces (18), solo blocks (6) and points (262.0).
- After being chosen for the All-EIVA Second-Team, Johnny Gomez became the fifth Patriot to receive three All-EIVA honors over the course of his career. He finished second in the EIVA in digs with 237 and claimed two EIVA Defensive Player of the Week awards over the course of the season (Jan. 22 and Feb. 26). He finished his time at George Mason with a career digs per set average is 2.60, a new career record for the rally-scoring era.
- RS-freshman Jack Reese exhibited a strong presence at the net during his first campaign in Fairfax. The middle blocker led the team with 77 total blocks and finished second in blocks per set at 0.96, statistics that finished 9th and 6th in the EIVA respectively. He was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week for Jan. 29 and posted a season high nine blocks vs. Grand Canyon (Jan. 6).
