FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason Softball team (22-24, 12-8 A-10) will close out the regular season with a trip to the Northeast to take on the UMass Minutewomen. UMass is in first place in the Atlantic 10 and is yet to drop a game in conference play this season. The teams will kick-start the series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at noon and conclude the regular season with one game at the same time on Sunday.
The Patriots have been red-hot on the diamond as of late, winning a season-high six consecutive games as well as 11 of the last 12. A large part of the success has been due to the pitching of sophomore
Bekah Ansbro and the hitting of RS-junior
Jess Middleton. Ansbro went 6-1 in the month of April with 65 strikeouts and a 1.90 ERA over 72.2 innings. Middleton had a stellar month herself, hitting .435/.526/.717 while leading the team in hits (20) and total bases (33) during that stretch.
In the last 12 games, sophomore
Sydnee Wells has led the team with a .435 batting average, while also posting a 1.109 OPS. Wells reached base four times in the Dayton series and hit her second triple of the season in the finale. She was also behind the plate for Ansbro's complete game shutout in Saturday's game one.
The Patriots swept Dayton in the regular season for the first time in the team's A-10 history. In Saturday's doubleheader sweep, George Mason kept Dayton off the scoreboard with 6-0 and 2-0 victories, highlighted by a save and a complete game shutout by Ansbro. Through the 21 innings pitched against the Flyers, Ansbro and freshman
Haellie Gordon combined for a 0.99 ERA.
RS-freshman
Adriana Erickson went 3-for-10 against the Flyers. She finished the weekend with a two-hit performance on Sunday that featured her first collegiate triple. In the last 12 games, Erickson is hitting .324 with an OPS of 1.042. She is leading the team in total bases (25) and tied for the team lead in RBI (10) in that stretch.
Sophomore
Madison Aker has solidified the leadoff hitter role for head coach
Joe Verbanic. The slap-hitter has batted in that spot for the last 21 games while posting a .277 batting average and a .406 on-base percentage. Her six stolen bases in that stretch lead the team while her 18 hits are tied for third.
