FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason's Sharon Dorsey has been chosen as a recipient of an Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship.

Dorsey, a senior sprinter on the women's track and field team, was one of 14 graduating student-athletes in the Atlantic 10 Conference to receive the postgraduate scholarship. All 14 A-10 institutions had a student-athlete receive the $5,000 postgraduate scholarship, which will contribute toward full-time enrollment in a graduate or professional program.

Designed to provide graduating student-athletes the opportunity to continue their college education, the program awards $70,000 in scholarship funding to former A-10 student-athletes. This marks the fourth straight year the Atlantic 10 has provided the scholarship to 14 individuals, and over the past five years, the A-10's Postgraduate Scholarship program has awarded over $350,000 to 66 former student-athletes.

"This is one of our most prestigious and highly-coveted honors that the Atlantic 10 awards its student-athletes," stated Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "Each of our postgraduate honorees are deserving of this award, super intelligent and multi-talented young people! Each will be exceptional leaders and successful in their post-graduate studies. I offer my congratulations to these 14 outstanding men and women."

A native of Baltimore, Md., Dorsey graduated last week from George Mason with a bachelor's degree in environmental science. She is a three-time Provost Scholar Athlete and a four-year member of the Dean's List. She also has been named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for women's track four times and has been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll six times. Last month, she received the athletic department's prestigious Susan A. Collins Leadership Award for Women in Sport.

On the track, she won six A-10 gold medals during her four-year career. She most recently was a member of the gold-medal winning 4x400-meter relay team that set the A-10 Championship record with a time of 3:38.58.

She received the Outstanding Performance Departmental Award from the College of Science and the 2017 MVP Award from the Black Excellence Gala. She also served on the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as the treasurer.

She was an A-10 representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Council, where she also served as the Vice President. Dorsey volunteered in the Occoquan River Clean Up, Victim's Rights Run/Walk 5k, and the Langston Hughes Middle School Career Day.

The selection process, which involves the league's athletic directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives, resulted in a class with an average GPA of 3.74. The class is comprised of 10 female student-athletes and four males, representing six different sports.
