FAIRFAX, Va. – For the fourth straight year, the George Mason women's lacrosse team finds itself in a good position – with a chance to win a conference tournament championship.
The Patriots begin play in their fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship on Thursday at Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond. No. 6 seed Mason will play No. 3 seed Saint Joseph's at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. The winners plays No. 2 seed and host Richmond at 4 p.m. on Friday in a semifinal.
Mason, which finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with VCU and Davidson, has made the Atlantic 10 tournament in each of head coach
Jessy Morgan's first four years at the helm. Mason, Richmond and nine-time defending tournament champ Massachusetts are the only teams to qualify for the league tournament the last four years.
The Patriots (11-6, 5-4 A-10), however, are still looking for their first A-10 tournament win since joining the league in 2014. Mason will try to redeem a 16-9 loss to Saint Joseph's less than two weeks ago on April 22 in Philadelphia. The Hawks (11-6, 7-2) have won the last two in the series against the Patriots, scoring an average of 18 goals and winning by an average scoring margin of 8.5. Mason leads the all-time series 9-4.
Saint Joseph's finished third in the A-10, with losses to only co-champions UMass and Richmond. The Hawks have won six straight, tying the single-season program record. Juniors Francesca Donato (34 goals, 16 assists) and Rebecca Lane (33 goals, 25 assists) lead the way.
Mason is coming off a 23-8 victory over VCU in the regular-season finale on Saturday on Senior Day at George Mason Stadium. Junior
Chachi Kelehan broke the single-game school records for goals (eight) and points (11) while also setting the single-season record for points (73). The attacker from Ellicott City, Md., was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Tuesday.
