Winning Pitcher:
Bekah Ansbro (6-8) – Losing Pitcher: Sam Wood (1-2)
OLEAN, N.Y. – George Mason won its fourth consecutive game to form its longest winning streak of the season. The weekend concluded with a 13-2 win over St. Bonaventure to sweep the season series and push George Mason's head-to-head record to a perfect 11-0.
The production at the top of the order was outstanding, as sophomores
Madison Aker and
Alyssa Lawton led the Patriots with four hits apiece, each doubling their previous single-game career highs. Aker also notched three RBI to set a personal best while Lawton swiped her 10
th stolen base of the season to add to the four-hit day.
The Patriots got home runs from RS-junior
Jess Middleton and senior
Brooke Sullivan. Three of Middleton's four RBI came on her home run to help her produce a career day in the runs driven in department. Sullivan's home run was the first of her career, adding another credential to her breakout senior season. The Newville, Pa. native added two hits to increase her season total 34, a mark that sets a new single-season career high.
RS-junior
Liz Seymour and junior
Jess Curbeira each pitched in two hits and two RBI, along with RS-freshman
Adriana Erickson posting one of Mason's three doubles.
"It was a strong team effort all around in some challenging conditions. The ladies came ready to play and it showed. I am very proud of all of them, all three phases performed well," head coach
Joe Verbanic said. "Our pitching was very tough and made pitches when we needed to keep them in check. Our defense made plays all weekend, and we made some great plays behind the pitchers to get us out of jams. Last but not least, the offense got on track. We executed to score the runs we needed in the first two games, then the offense really got going today. There was a lot of quality at-bats and a lot of good contact off the bat by everyone."
Aker bunted her way onto first to begin the game and advanced to third one batter later when Lawton placed a bunt down. Seymour tallied her 15
th RBI of the season with an infield hit to get Mason on the board at 1-0. The lead was doubled the very next hitter with a sacrifice-fly by Middleton.
The Bonnies got a run back in their half of the first with a leadoff home run, but starting pitcher
Bekah Ansbro made that the only runner that would cross the plate that inning. Ansbro's teammates picked her up next time at the plate with Aker notching her second hit in as many innings – one that would drive in sophomore
Sydnee Wells to once again establish a two-run lead.
The Patriots continued to tack on throughout the game, beginning with a solo home run to left field by Sullivan. The blast was her first of her four-year career and extended the Patriot lead to 4-1. One inning later, Wells became the fifth Patriot to drive in a run with a sacrifice-fly that scored Middleton to elevate the Patriots' lead even further at 5-1.
St. Bonaventure got one back in the fifth to narrow the Mason lead to 5-2. The play promoted a pitching change that sent freshman
Haellie Gordon to the circle, and she did her job by keeping the Bonnies' run total to two.
While a 5-2 lead was a healthy margin, the team posted eight insurance runs in the top of the seventh to go up 13-2. Curbeira got the scoring started with a two-RBI double, followed by RBI singles from Aker and Seymour. Still with no outs and two runners aboard, St. Bonaventure made a pitching change to face Middleton. It was to no avail as the King George, Va. native clubbed a three-run home run to left field for her second roundtripper in as many games.
The Patriots got two more hits after Middleton's blast and led 13-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. Gordon retired three of the four batters she faced in a low-stress frame to secure the blowout win for the Patriots.
