CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – George Mason squared off for round two against the University of Virginia on Wednesday night, this time in Charlottesville. Three hits from
Jess Curbeira and a home run from
Liz Seymour wasn't enough as the Cavaliers took the midweek game 12-9.
Curbeira led the Patriots on their offensive attack, collecting three hits for her third three-hit game of the season. Curbeira increased her batting average and OPS to .353 and .952 respectively and continues to lead the team in both departments.
Liz Seymour went deep for the first time this season with a shot down the right field line in the first inning. The home run was Seymour's seventh of her career, putting her in a five-way tie for 10
th among the program's career leaders – one of the players she's tied with being current teammate
Sydnee Wells.
The Patriots picked up where they left off on Sunday on the base paths and swiped three more.
Madison Aker,
Alyssa Lawton and Curbeira each registered a stolen base, giving Curbeira her first of the season and Lawton her team-leading seventh. In addition to the stolen base, Aker notched two hits to tie her career high. It was the 11
th time in her two seasons at Mason she's had a multi-hit game.
The Patriots jumped all over Virginia early with a three-run first inning that began with an Aker single. The shortstop advanced on a wild pitch on three separate occasions to score and put Mason up first. The big blast in the inning came off the bat of Seymour with a two-run home run to right field that put the Green and Gold ahead 3-0.
Virginia countered with four runs in their first turn to bat and took a lead in hindsight they wouldn't give up. The score stayed at 4-3 in favor of UVA through three full innings until the Cavaliers doubled their run total in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-3.
Mason would not go down without a fight as they continued to chip away in the last three innings of the game. The late inning production began with a two-run fifth that was highlighted by a
Jess Middleton RBI on a ground out. The Patriots cut the deficit to 8-7 the following inning when
Miah Wilson was credited with an RBI off a fielder's choice, as well as the Patriots tacking on their seventh run by taking advantage of a fielding error.
However, with a slim lead in the bottom of the sixth, Virginia blew it open with a four-run inning that featured a two-run home run, albeit both unearned runs. Down 12-7 in the seventh, the Patriots fought back to make the score 12-9 with
Jessica Goodwin notching her first collegiate RBI. Though it was all the Green and Gold could muster and they ultimately came up short. Virginia took the midweek game by a score of 12-9.
