FAIRFAX, Va. – The honors continue to roll in for George Mason center Natlie Butler.
The graduate student was named Hero Sports' Division I Women's Basketball Mid-Major Player of the Year, the website announced on Monday. This is the second Hero Sports honor for Butler, who also was named the Hero Sports Best Senior in Women's Basketball last month. Â
Butler won the award in a vote of fans, receiving 48.25 percent (1,394 votes). She edged out IUPUI freshman Macee Williams, who received 1,218 votes (42.16 percent).
Butler, the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year, leads the country in rebounding (16.3 rpg) and double-doubles (31). She also leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring (19.0 ppg). Her 31 consecutive double-doubles are the third-longest streak in Division I women's basketball history.
Her 521 rebounds are the most in the country this season and are the sixth-most all-time in a season by a Division I women's basketball player. The 6-foot-5 native of Fairfax Station, Va., needs just 19 rebounds to break the Division I record. She has already set the Atlantic 10 and George Mason records for rebounds in a season.
Butler and the Patriots (23-9) set the school record for wins and finished fourth in the A-10 with a 11-5 mark in league play. They advanced to the quarterfinal of the A-10 tournament before falling to eventual tournament champ George Washington.
The Patriots hope to extend their season as they await their postseason fate Monday night.
