The George Mason Softball team (8-8) hits the road on its spring break trip to Florida for a six-game srtetch to close out the early portion of non-conference play. The opponents feature a doubleheader with 2017 MEAC runner-up Bethune-Cookman (Tuesday, 1:00 p.m.), participation in the Stetson Hatter Roundup against Manhattan College (Thursday, 1:00 p.m.) and Stetson (Thursday, 4:00 p.m.) and a doubleheader at Jacksonville University (Saturday, 12:00 p.m.) to close out the week.
The Patriots played all four teams last season on the road, with the matchups against Jacksonville coming in the season-opening River City Invitational. In one of the matchups against Bethune-Cookman,
Madison Larsen earned her first career victory with 4.1 innings of one-run ball performance, as well as
Bekah Ansbro earning her first career save – one where she threw 2.2 innings.
Junior
Marina Vitalich published her name at the top of the George Mason record books with a Sunday afternoon strikeout to become the program's all-time leader in career punchouts with 396. Vitalich recorded the save in Mason's 8-4 victory over Siena College to tie the school record with five in her career. The San Pedro, Calif. native lowered her ERA to 2.51 and her WHIP to 1.07 with her 10 innings of work.
The Patriots boast two players in the top-five in batting average among Atlantic 10 teams.
Jess Curbeira is tied for the conference lead at .458, while
Brooke Sullivan checks in at number five with a .409 batting average. The two upperclassmen make George Mason the only team in the Atlantic 10 to have two players hitting .400 or better.
Sullivan had a career high three hits in Mason's win over Siena College on March 11. Two of those hits went for extra bases, both doubles, which tied her career high in that department. The Newville, Pa. native is riding a six-game hitting streak where she's gone 9-for-20 (.450) with a 1.172 OPS. The hitting streak is her longest this season and the longest since she hit in nine straight games between April 15, 2017-April 28, 2017.
RS-junior
Liz Seymour started all four Cherry Blossom Classic games in centerfield. She chipped in three hits, scored four runs and has reached base safely in each of the last 15 games, collecting a hit in 13 of them. Seymour enters the week one double and one home run shy of having sole possession of 10
th place on the program's all-time leaders, and one triple shy of moving into a four-way tie for seventh on the program's all-time list. The Saint John, Ind. native currently has 131 career hits and is chasing Julia Czarnecki (159 career hits) for tenth on the program's all-time list.
Sophomore
Sydnee Wells went deep for her second home run of the season to put her in the team lead. Wells' home run came in Mason's March 10 victory over Cornell where her three RBI tied a career high. Wells now has six home runs on her career resume to put her one shy of entering the top-10 among the school record book.
Freshman
Haellie Gordon picked up two wins in two consecutive days over the weekend to improve to 5-1. Gordon only surrendered one walk in her 10.2 innings of work to remain at the top of the A-10 in walks per seven (0.61), an average that's good for seventh in the NCAA. Other notable individual statistics include Sullivan (.527) and Curbeira (.526) ranking second and third in the A-10 in OBP, as well as Curbeira leading the conference in doubles (9).
As a team the Patriots have compiled 24 doubles to lead the conference in doubles per game. The team ERA and batting average rank fifth in the conference.
