RICHMOND, Va. – A nemesis stands between the George Mason women's basketball team and its first trip to the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
The Patriots will play Revolutionary Rival George Washington for the third time this season when the teams meet in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship at 2 p.m. Friday at the Richmond Coliseum.
No. 4 seed Mason (23-8, 11-5 Atlantic 10) will be playing in the quarterfinals for the second time in three years. The Patriots last advanced to the final eight in 2016, suffering a 78-48 loss to eventual tournament champ George Washington.
The fifth-seeded Colonials (16-13, 10-6) defeated Mason twice in the regular season. They stymied the Patriots in a 62-52 victory on Jan. 7 in D.C., and then edged out a 65-61 victory on Feb. 7 in Fairfax. George Washington has won 12 straight against Mason and leads the all-time series 24-9.
GW has won four of its last five and is coming off a 69-49 victory over La Salle in the first round of the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship. The Colonials are led by senior guard Brianna Cummings, who averages a team-high 14.2 points and 5.8 rebounds. Senior forward Kelli Prange, the A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year, averages 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds primarily off the bench.
Mason, which has won five of six, advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating St. Bonaventure 89-79 in the first round on Tuesday.
