FAIRFAX, Va. – In a season where the George Mason women's basketball team has accomplished feats its hasn't achieved in many years, the Patriots will once again try to a foil a rival that has held the upper hand in recent memory.
The Patriots host Revolutionary Rival George Washington at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at EagleBank Arena in the Game of the Week. All Mason students with a valid Mason student ID will receive free Dippin' Dots ice cream (while supplies last).
Mason (18-6, 7-3 Atlantic 10) has already clinched its first winning season in 14 years and has collected its most conference wins since joining the Atlantic 10 five years ago. But the Patriots are still eying a first that has eluded them for several years – a win over rival George Washington.
The Colonials have won 11 straight over Mason dating back to Dec. 22, 2011 when the Patriots were still in the Colonial Athletic Association. Mason is 9-23 all-time against GW.
The teams met once already this season – a month ago with the Colonials grabbing a 62-52 victory at the Smith Center in D.C.
Natalie Butler (16 points) and
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (career-high 26 points) combined for 42 points for the Patriots but George Washington's Brianna Cummings scored a career-high 28 points to fend off a late charge by Mason.
George Washington (11-11, 6-4) has won four of seven since that matchup, including two straight. The Colonials defeated St. Bonaventure 63-56 on the road on Sunday. Cummings leads GW with 14.8 points. Kelli Prange, who did not play against Mason earlier this season, averages 13.2 points and is tied for the team lead with 6.2 rebounds a game.
The Patriots continue to be led by Butler, who leads the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg) and ranks first in the nation in both rebounding (15.8 rpg) and double-doubles (23). Her string of 23 consecutive double-doubles is the fourth-longest in Division I women's basketball history. The 6-foot-5 graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week on Monday, marking the sixth time this year she has shared or won the award outright. She has scored 20-plus points her last two games.
Cardano-Hillary ranks third in the league in scoring (17.6 ppg) and leads the conference in steals (64). Her points per game and steals rank second and third, respectively, among NCAA Division I freshmen.
