Patriots Host UMass in Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinal Saturday

TICKETS:  George Mason students receive free admission with a valid Mason student ID.  Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for faculty, staff, children 12 and under and senior citizens.  Tickets go on sale one hour before the game.  All sales are cash only.
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team enters the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship as the fourth seed, hosting fifth-seeded Massachusetts in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday.  The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
 
Last time out, Mason (13-5-0, 8-2-0 A-10) clinched the fourth seed, scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-1 victory over Rhode Island on Sunday.
 
Freshman forward Olivia Reese scored two goals, while classmate Emma van der Vorst netted her 13th goal of the season.  Sophomore midfielder Kayla Hamric and sophomore defender Shannon Lee also found the back of the net.
 
The Patriots, who rank 36th in the RPI, finished the season 8-2-0 for 24 points in Atlantic 10 play, both program records.
 
Emma van der Vorst led the A-10 in goals (13) and points (30) and tied for first in game-winners (5).  She ranked fourth in the conference in shots on goal (30) and fifth in the league in shots (55).
 
Nationally, van der Vorst is tied for 10th in goals and 15th in points.  She has scored in 13 of the last 15 matches and extended her program-record point streak to 15 games.
 
Mason senior midfielder Emily Littell finished second on the team with a career-high five goals and was second in points (12).  Among A-10 leaders, Littell is tied for seventh in game-winners (3), tied for 15th in goals and tied for 18th in points.
 
Senior midfielder Rebecca Callison led the team and finished tied for sixth in the A-10 in assists (6).
 
Hamric and Reese tied for third on the club in goals (3), while Hamric and Mason graduate student Jewel Christian finished tied for third on the team in points (8).
 
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Morgan Symmers (15 games/1179 minutes) has a record of 11-3-0 and a 1.14 goals against average.  She is 6-1-0 against A-10 opponents this season, with four of the wins by shutout. 
 
Symmers, who had a streak of 370:31 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal over seven appearances from Sept. 27-Oct. 21, finished the regular season tied for fourth in the league in wins (11).
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Moser (6 games/378 minutes) has a 2-2-0 record and a 1.90 goals against average.
 
Mason had 10 different players tally at least one goal and 13 players record at least one point during the regular season, while seven players recorded at least one game-winning goal.
 
The Patriots have won five straight and seven of the last eight matches overall.  Mason has scored the first goal in 13 of the last 14 games.
 
Mason has a 7-2-0 record at home and has outscored opponents by a combined score of 22-12 at George Mason Stadium.  The Patriots went 4-1-0 at home against Atlantic 10 opponents, with victories over Dayton, Davidson, Duquesne and Rhode Island.
 
The Patriots have a record of 11-2-2 in their last 15 regular-season home games against A-10 opponents.
 
The Patriots are fifth in the Atlantic 10 in goals (33), sixth in shots (208) and seventh in shots per game (11.6).  Mason has taken the fourth-most corner kicks in the conference (94). 
 
This will be the second meeting between the Patriots and Minutewomen this season.
 
Mason earned a 1-0 win over UMass when van der Vorst scored the lone goal of the match in the 47th minute of play on Oct. 7 at Rudd Field in Amherst, Mass.
 
In goal, Symmers played the first half and Moser the second half to combine for the shutout to hand the Minutewomen their first conference loss of the season.
 
UMass finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots, while Mason had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.  The Patriots had six corner kicks and the Minutewomen had five in the game.
 
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
 
The Minutewomen finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-5-1, including a mark of 6-3-1 against Atlantic 10 opponents.  UMass went 5-4-0 at home and 6-1-1 on the road this season.
 
UMass scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Dayton, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. 
 
The 11 victories are the most for the Minutewomen since the 2006 season and the most in A-10 play since 2011.

UMass went 4-0-1 on the road against the A-10 during the regular season, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 9-3.  The Minutewomen earned road wins at Rhode Island (Sept. 23), La Salle Sept. 30), Davidson (Oct. 12) and Dayton (Oct. 21) and played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Fordham (Oct. 4).
 
Freshman forward Lauren Bonavita and junior forward Rebecca Frisk lead the team and are tied for seventh in the A-10 in goals (7), tied for 14th in the league in assists (4) and are tied for eighth in the conference in points (18).  Bonavita is tied for seventh in the A-10 in game-winners (3).
 
Sophomore midfielder Jenny Hipp finished the regular season tied for 12th in the A-10 in goals (6), tied for sixth in the conference in assists (6) and tied for eighth in the league in points (18).
 
Senior goalkeeper Peyton Ryan (17 games/1463 minutes) is 11-5-1 and ranks second in the A-10 in both goals against average (0.68) and shutouts (5).  She is third in the conference in save percentage (.810).
 
UMass has scored 36 goals and conceded only 12 this season.  The Minutewomen have outscored opponents 12-3 in the first half of play and 24-9 in the second half.
 
The Minutewomen rank third in the conference in goals (36) and shots (289).  UMass also ranks second in shots per game (17.0) and fourth in shooting percentage (.125).
 
Defensively, the Minutewomen are tied for second in the A-10 in shutouts (8).  UMass has conceded the second-fewest goals in the A-10 (12) and rank second in the conference in goals against average (0.70).
 
CORNER KICK
 
Eight of the Atlantic 10 Conference's 14 teams qualified for the tournament, with the top four seeds earning a home game. 
 
The winners in the quarterfinal round will advance to the A-10 Championship semifinal hosted by the University of Dayton on Nov. 3-5 at Baujan Field.
