Patriots Defeat Rhode Island, Earn Fourth Seed in A-10 Championship

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team clinched the fourth seed in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, scoring a season-high five goals in a 5-1 victory over Rhode Island on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. 
 
The Patriots will host fifth-seeded Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 27 with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
Mason (13-5-0, 8-2-0 A-10, 24 Pts.) fell behind Rhode Island (0-17-1, 0-9-1 A-10, 1 Pt.) in the first minute of the match.
 
After a save by Mason redshirt junior goalkeeper Morgan Symmers just 44 seconds into the game, Rams freshman midfielder Rebecca D'Anna collected the rebound and scored her first collegiate goal into the lower left corner from five yards out to put Rhode Island in front 1-0.
 
Symmers had gone 370:31 consecutive minutes over seven appearances since last conceding a goal.
 
The Patriots went on to score five unanswered goals in the match.
 
Mason freshman forward Emma van der Vorst netted the equalizer in the 12th minute off a free kick, scoring her 13th goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game. 
 
Nationally, van der Vorst is tied for the eighth-most goals and tied for 11th in points.  She has scored in 13 of the last 15 matches and extended her program-record point streak to 15 games.
 
The Patriots took the lead for good in the 22nd minute.
 
Sophomore defender Shannon Lee scored her first goal of the season with a header off a free kick to put the Patriots in front 2-1. 
 
Senior midfielder Rebecca Callison picked up her sixth assist of the season on the goal.  She finished tied for sixth in the A-10 in assists during the regular season.
 
Mason tallied three goals in a span of 10 minutes in the second half to take control of the match.
 
Sophomore midfielder Kayla Hamric scored her third goal of the season in the 59th minute to increase the Mason lead to 3-1. 
 
Senior forward Jewel Christian set up the play with a cross into the box to record her fourth assist of the year.
 
Redshirt freshman forward Olivia Reese then scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart.
 
Reese found the back of the net in the 67th minute from 10 yards out to extend the advantage to 4-1.  Freshman Keri Yoon recorded her first collegiate assist on the play.
 
Reese, who led all players with three shots on goal in the game, scored again in the 69th minute with senior Nia Elbeck registering the assist, as the Patriots built a 5-1 lead.
 
Mason Athletic Director Brad Edwards joined the Mason seniors (pictured from left to right) Natalie McCarthy, Nia Elbeck, Rebecca Callison, Tara McQueen, Jewel Christian, Írunn Aradottir, Allison Littell and Emily Littell) on the field prior to the match.
 
The Patriots finished with a 24-8 advantage in shots, including 16-5 in shots on goal.  Mason had nine corner kicks and Rhode Island had two in the game.
 
Eight different players recorded a goal or an assist in the match for the Patriots.
 
Symmers (11-3-0) made three saves to earn the win.  She has a record of 6-1-0 against A-10 opponents this season, with four of the wins by shutout.  Symmers finished the regular season tied for fourth in the A-10 in wins by a goalkeeper (11).
 
Mason senior goalkeeper Tara McQueen entered the contest in the second half and made one save.
 
Rhode Island sophomore goalkeeper Julia Freeman (0-6-0) made nine saves, while Rams senior goalkeeper Haley Brennen made two stops after entering the game in the second half.
 
The Patriots clinched the fourth seed in the A-10 Championship with a program-record eight victories and 24 points in conference play.
 
Emma van der Vorst led the A-10 in goals (13) and points (30) and tied for first in game-winners (5).  She ranked third in the conference in shots on goal (30).
 
Mason had 10 different players tally at least one goal and 13 players record at least one point during the regular season, while seven players recorded at least one game-winning goal.
 
Mason finished the season with five straight wins for an overall record of 13-5-0, including a mark of 7-2-0 at home. 
 
The Patriots have a record of 11-2-2 in their last 15 regular-season home games against A-10 opponents.

The fourth-seeded Patriots are back in action next weekend in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, hosting fifth-seeded Massachusetts on Saturday.  The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
