Box Score OLEAN, N.Y. – For the first time in 14 years, the George Mason women's basketball team is guaranteed a winning season.
The Patriots cruised past St. Bonaventure for a 76-63 victory on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center. With the win, Mason (17-6, 6-3 Atlantic 10) clinched its first winning season since 2003-04.
The 17 victories are the most since that 2003-04 squad won 18. The Patriots' six conference wins also match their win total in league play each of the last two seasons.
Four Mason players scored in double figures led by graduate student
Natalie Butler, who recorded her 22nd straight double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Her string of 22 consecutive double-doubles is the fourth longest streak in Division I women's basketball history.
Sophomore
Sarah Kaminski scored a season-high 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers. Freshman
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, the Atlantic 10's leading scorer, added 13 points as she has scored in double figures all 23 games. Sophomore
Jacy Bolton scored 11 points, marking her third straight game with at least 11 points.
Mason never trailed after the opening minute of the second quarter. St. Bonaventure (7-16, 2-8) went ahead 18-16 on a 3-point play by Jalisha Terry with 9:40 left in the first half. The Bonnies failed to score for the next seven-plus minutes and the Patriots rattled off a 15-0 run. Kaminski's third 3-pointer of the game capped off the spurt and gave Mason a 31-28 lead.
St. Bonaventure pulled within four early in the third quarter but the Patriots again provided an answer. Kaminski converted a layup off an offensive rebound by
Tayler Dodson to spark a 9-0 run. Bolton's 3-pointer with 7:21 left in the period lifted Mason to a 42-29 advantage. The lead never dipped below 10 after that as the Patriots shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) in the third quarter.
Eight Patriots scored as the team shot 43.9 percent from the field. Mason outrebounded St. Bonaventure 49-28, scoring 18 second-chance points on 18 offensive rebounds.
In addition to her 22nd double-double, which leads the country, Butler also had four blocks, four steals and two assists. Dodson grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists to go along with four points. Sophomore
Alexsis Grate, playing in her third straight game after returning from a foot injury, scored five points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench in 14 minutes.
The Patriots wrap up their two-game road trip against Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m. on Sunday on a game nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
