FAIRFAX, Va. – Only two teams remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play this season. The George Mason women's basketball team will square off against one of them this weekend.
The Patriots head north for a tough road challenge at Duquesne at noon on Sunday at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh. The Dukes (15-3, 5-0 A-10) are one of two unbeaten teams (along with Dayton) in conference play.
Mason (15-4, 4-1) and Duquesne are the only two teams in the A-10 with 15 wins this season. But the Dukes have held the upper hand against the Patriots recently, winning the last six meetings in the series for a 6-2 advantage all-time. Duquesne swept the season series last year, including ending Mason's season with a 66-55 victory in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament last February.
The Dukes, who reached the A-10 championship game and the WNIT last year, have been on an impressive roll as of late. They've won five straight and 13 of 14. Their only loss in the last two months came against No. 1 Connecticut (104-52) on Dec. 22 on a neutral floor in Toronto. Duquesne has won their first five conference games by an average of 15.2 points, but did pull out close victories against Massachusetts (60-57) and George Washington (54-53), the latter of which handed Mason its only conference loss of the year.
Duquesne is led by junior Chassidy Omogrosso, who ranks fourth in the A-10 with 16.7 points a game. The Dukes also have two of the top 3-point shooters in the country in junior guard Julijana Vojinovic (53 made 3-pointers) and Omogrosso (51). Vojinovic is tied for sixth in the league with 16.4 points a game.
Mason boasts the top two scorers in the Atlantic 10: graduate student
Natalie Butler and freshman
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, who both average 18.2 points. Cardano-Hillary also leads the league in steals (52) and ranks second among Division I freshmen in scoring.
Butler also leads the country in rebounding (15.4 rpg) and is tied for the most double-doubles in the nation (18). She is currently in the midst of the sixth-longest double-doubles streak in Division I women's basketball history as she has strung together 18 straight double-doubles.
The Patriots are riding a bit of a hot stretch as well. They've won two straight and five of six, with their lone loss in the last month a 62-52 setback at rival George Washington. Mason is coming off a 77-56 victory over Richmond at home on Wednesday. Butler led the way with 17 points and 19 rebounds, including her 1,000th career board, Cardano-Hillary added 13 points and sophomore
Sarah Kaminski chipped in 10 points while tying career-highs with seven rebounds and four assists. Eight players scored six points or more.
The win gave Mason 15 for the season, marking just the second time since 2003-04 the Patriots have had 15 wins or more in a season. Their current 4-1 start in conference play is their best since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2013-14 and best overall since 1996-97 when they were still members of the Colonial Athletic Association.
