FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason Patriots dropped both of their Saturday matches against Penn and Central Michigan by a score of 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. After dropping the first two sets against Penn in the morning match (25-12, 25-17), the Patriots stayed within striking distance but ultimately fell 25-21 and dropped the match in straight sets.
In the night cap Mason got off to a fast start against Central Michigan and went toe-to-toe with the Chippewas throughout the set. Mason enjoyed a 15-11 lead at one point thanks to a 6-2 run featuring two
Mikala Wells kills.
"It was following the game plan better," head coach
Aylene Ilkson said. "In the third and the fourth sets they really started to pick it up and realized 'we have a 100 percent chance of winning this match' and that's when it came alive. We're still playing around with lineups a bit so figuring out the right pieces on the kids that are firing at the right time is how we're getting moving in these matches."
After dropping the second set 25-16, Mason came out firing to begin the third set going up 3-0 early and then regaining the lead at 13-12 via a
Catie Espinoza service ace. CMU later re-took the lead and held it at 21-17, but Mason fought back thanks to a 5-1 run featuring kills from
Katrina Santos,
Emily Konchan and
Bailey Williams. After CMU was in position to win the match with set point, a Chippewa attack error propelled a 3-0 Mason run that won the Patriots set three.
Pihla Jarvenpaa had a big kill during Mason's 3-0 run to win the set.
In set four, CMU got out to a 6-1 start and never looked back taking the set 25-20. Williams logged two kills, an assist, a block and a service ace in the fourth set.
Mason will resume play next weekend in Towson, Md. for the Towson Invite Sept. 8-9. The Patriots' opponents feature Eastern Michigan, Towson and Lafayette.
