PHILADELPHIA – For the second straight year, the season ended abruptly for the George Mason women's lacrosse team.
The No. 4 seed Patriots suffered a 14-13 loss to No. 5 Davidson in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship on Thursday at Sweeney Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's. Mason (11-7) was also ousted in its first game of the A-10 tournament last year, falling to Richmond in the semifinals after receiving a first-round bye. The Patriots have made the league tournament the last three years but have yet to win a tournament game since joining the A-10 in 2014.
Davidson (8-9) rallied back from a six-goal second-half deficit and Sarah Kopp scored the game-winner with 1:04 left. The Patriots won the ensuing draw control but turned the ball over with 28 seconds left.
Mason got the ball back after
Rachel Woods forced a Davidson turnover with six seconds remaining. But the Patriots had to go nearly the distance of the field for the equalizer. A last-ditch pass toward the net went high and rolled out of bounds as time expired.
The Patriots led 7-3 at halftime and pushed the lead to 11-5 with 23:28 left in the first half. But Davidson, which had just lost 19-9 to Mason last Saturday in the regular-season finale, methodically mounted a comeback. The Wildcats scored four straight goals to spark an 8-1 run.
Sarah Kopp pushed Davidson in front on a free-position goal with 2:16 remaining. But the Patriots quickly responded, with senior captain
Alexa McGovern knotting the game at 13-13 with 1:46 to go off an assist from
Chachi Kelehan.
McGovern won the ensuing draw control but the Patriots turned the ball over and Davidson took advantage as Brockett scored unassisted with 64 seconds left. Mason again won the draw control but turned the ball over twice in the final 28 seconds. The Patriots committed 16 turnovers, including nine in the second half.
McGovern scored four goals in her final collegiate game. Fellow senior
Jordan Sdanowich added three goals and senior
Taylor Altomare and freshman
Hailey Johnson each had two goals. Junior
Lindsey Tangeman tied a career high with three assists for the second straight game and scored a goal. Altomare, Kelehan and senior
Brooke Lorber each had two assists.
