FAIRFAX, Va. – For the second time in as many years, the George Mason women's lacrosse team enjoyed a perfect opening weekend to begin conference play.
Seniors
Melissa Lobaccaro and
Jordan Sdanowich each scored a career-high five goals to lead the Patriots to a commanding 21-9 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Less than 48 hours after defeating La Salle in the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday, Mason (6-4, 2-0 A-10) cruised to its second straight win to begin league action with a 2-0 mark for the second consecutive season.
Senior captain
Alexa McGovern added four goals as eight players scored. The Patriots never trailed, built a seven-goal lead just 15 minutes into game. St. Bonaventure (2-8, 0-2) pulled within four in the second half but Mason rattled off five straight goals to silence any thoughts of a comeback.
The comfortable lead for most of the game allowed head coach
Jessy Morgan to provide younger players a chance to log valuable minutes as the Patriots used 24 players.
Lindsey Tangeman and
Hailey Johnson each scored twice and
Hannah Warpinski,
Kelley Reilley and Taylor Atlomare also netted goals. Warpinski had a career day, dishing out a personal-best three assists and collecting a career-high 10 draw controls. Her 10 draw controls were one shy of the school record of 11, which McGovern set last weekend in a win at Longwood.
Senior captain
Brooke Lorber also had three assists and
Chachi Kelehan,
Meghan Pendergast and Altomare also recorded assists.
Kira Greer collected five ground balls and freshman
Morgan Rynn had a career-high four caused turnovers and a personal-best four ground balls.
The Patriots used three goalkeepers, with sophomore
Elizabeth Benedetto getting the start. She made four saves in 39-plus minutes. Junior
Mackenzie Duffy played 10 minutes and made one save and freshman
Melissa Semkiw was in the net for the last 10 minutes of the game.
Mason now hits the road to play Duquesne at 4 p.m. on Friday in Pittsburgh.
