FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team rallied late and forced extra time with a nationally ranked foe.
But the Patriots came up short of pulling the upset in their home opener, falling 11-10 in overtime to No. 20 Virginia Tech on Wednesday night at George Mason Stadium. Senior
Alexa McGovern scored a game-tying goal with 54 seconds left in regulation. But the Hokies scored 46 seconds into sudden-death overtime on a free-position shot to escape with the victory.
Trailing 10-8, Mason sophomore
Chachi Kelehan scored her fourth goal of the night with 3:08 left in regulation. After senior
Jordan Sdanowich won the ensuing draw control, Mason (1-2) called a timeout with 1:31 left. That set up McGovern, who drained her first goal of the night off an assist from junior
Lindsey Tangeman.
Junior
Hannah Warpinski caused a turnover on the other end with five seconds to go to force overtime. But the Hokies (8-2) won the draw control, Kristine Loscalzo drew a foul and converted her free-position shot for the game winner.
Senior
Melissa Lobaccaro scored twice and McGovern, Sdanowich, senior
Brooke Lorber and freshman
Hailey Johnson each scored. In addition to her four goals, Kelehan also had an assist for a five-point night. Lorber also dished out three assists. Sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth Benedetto made nine saves against the Hokies, who erased a foul-goal, first-half deficit.
The Patriots return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Liberty at George Mason Stadium.
