WASHINGTON – The shots were available. But the George Mason women's lacrosse team failed to convert enough opportunities in its first loss of the season.
The Patriots suffered an 11-6 loss to Georgetown at Cooper Field on Saturday. Mason (1-1) scored just two goals in the first half and for the game scored on only six of 22 shots.
Despite 10 saves from Patriots goalkeeper
Elizabeth Benedetto – the reigning Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week – Georgetown found the back of the net 11 times on 26 shots. The Hoyas (2-4) scored five straight goals in the first half to take the lead for good and not look back in snapping a three-game losing streak.
Junior
Lindsey Tangeman broke a scoreless tie nearly nine minutes in to put the Patriots in front 1-0. But the lead didn't last long as Georgetown scored two minutes later for the first of four goals over the next five minutes. Senior
Alexa McGovern scored on assist from
Melissa Lobaccaro with 41 seconds left in the first half to cut the lead to 5-2 at halftime.
But Mason wouldn't get any closer than that as the Hoyas twice led by six in the second half. Senior
Jordan Sdanowich led the Patriots with two goals. McGovern, Tangeman, Lobaccaro and
Brooke Lorber also scored. Lobaccaro also added two assists and Tangeman and
Hannah Warpinski also dished out an assist. Warpinski also caused six turnovers – the most by a Mason player in nearly five years – and collected five ground balls.
Mason now returns to Fairfax for its home opener against Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium.
