FARMVILLE, Va. –
Alexa McGovern dominated the draw – and etched her name in the George Mason record book.
McGovern won a school-record 11 draw controls and matched a career high with five goals in leading the Patriots to a 23-13 road victory over Longwood on Saturday. Mason also tied a program record for most goals in a game, their most since also scoring 23 against Old Dominion on April 9, 2006.
The senior captain smashed the previous school record of seven for most draw controls in a game, which had been accomplished by five Mason players, including McGovern. The midfielder from Sykesville, Md., also owns the school record for most all-time draw controls in a career with 139.
"It's impressive to have that many (draw controls in a game) and be on the circle," Mason head coach
Jessy Morgan said. "It is a testament to her speed, athleticism and grit. Alexa started the game strong and matched up well against their first defensive scheme. We were able to finish our possessions with goals today, which made the difference."
Against the Lancers (4-6), she scored the first two goals of the game. The Patriots (4-3) never looked back, building a 4-0 lead and pushing the advantage to 10 goals late in the first half. They led by as many as 12 in the second half as 11 players scored.
"We have a lot of similar opponents (as Longwood) so it was important to have a good day before we start conference play," Morgan said.
