FAIRFAX, Va. – Behind sophomore
Chachi Kelehan's career day, the George Mason women's lacrosse team jumped back into the win column.
Kelehan tied a career high with five goals and senior captains
Brooke Lorber and
Alexa McGovern each scored three times to lead the Patriots to a 16-10 victory on a windy and cold Saturday at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (2-2) never trailed and led by as many as six in snapping a two-game losing streak. Liberty (1-6) stayed close in the first half, tying the game and trailing by one with 6:26 before halftime. But the Patriots scored six of seven goals during a stretch that started late in the first half and spanned into the second half to put the game out of reach.
Lorber scored with 5:01 before the break on a pass from freshman
Kelley Reilley for her first career assist to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. Kelehan and senior
Melissa Lobaccaro each scored in the opening five minutes of the second half. After a goal from the Flames, Mason responded with three unanswered goals from McGovern, Kelehan and freshman
Hailey Johnson for a 12-6 lead with less than 20 minutes to go.
Kelehan scored five goals on just six shots and dished out an assist for a six-point day. After going scoreless over her first two games, the 2016 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection has scored nine goals over the last two contests. Sophomore
Elizabeth Benedetto, who was also named an A-10 All-Rookie last year, made seven saves in 57:11 before freshman
Melissa Semkiw closed out the game.
The Patriots now hit the road for three straight games, starting against High Point at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in High Point, N.C.
