FAIRFAX, Va. – On a night dedicated the 2017 senior class, the Patriots welcomed the Saint Louis Billikens for the second matchup between the two this season. The pregame ceremony honored the team's four seniors, featuring
Ashley Mennes,
Jordan Glass,
Sydney Fanoga and
Kelly Schaller. Once the ceremony concluded though, the Billikens won the match 3-0.
"It was a disappointing loss but there were some positives with the way the team battled," head coach
Aylene Ilkson said. "Jordan was tremendous tonight with her ability to get both blocks and kills, and I'm proud of her and the entire senior class."
Fittingly it was co-captain
Jordan Glass that led the Patriots, as she compiled a team high seven kills on 15 attempts – good for a .400 hit percentage.
Kelly Schaller was credited with all but one of Mason's assists. She recorded 21 on the night and also picked up a kill.
To complete the quadfecta,
Sydney Fanoga opened the match with a kill in a sequence that began with
Ashley Mennes taking the opening serve. Immediately after,
Bailey Williams anchored the attack by picking up two kills and a service ace, which gave Mason an 8-6 lead. The Patriots were able to maintain that lead or stay within one point up until the mark in the set where Saint Louis held an 18-17 lead. Following a Patriots timeout where SLU led 19-17, Mason got kills from
Maddie French and Williams to stay within striking distance, but Saint Louis held on to win the set 25-23.
In a second set that saw the home team serve 10 times, Mason was led by French's three kills. However, Saint Louis picked up the second set win at 25-10 and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
After the break, Mason came out hot with a 3-0 run behind two kills from Glass. Saint Louis later followed up with a 3-0 run of their own making the score 5-5. After that the teams traded attacks with neither side getting more than two consecutive points up to where Mason led 14-12. The Billikens then went on a 10-5 run forcing Mason to use both its timeouts, and led 22-19. The Patriots made the necessary adjustments took control after breaking the huddle, taking five of the next seven points forcing the set to go beyond 25. However, the valiant effort wasn't enough as Saint Louis won the set 26-24, winning the match in the process in straight sets.
